After winning eight games in nine chances, the University of Cincinnati baseball team is in the midst of a three-game losing streak after getting swept by Michigan State University over the weekend. Cincinnati (8-9) will play its first midweek games of the 2012 season on Tuesday and Wednesday. UC will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. on Tuesday to play the Butler University Bulldogs (10-10) at 3 p.m. Bearcats freshman right-handed pitcher Bryan Chenoweth is expected to make his first collegiate state for UC after pitching in four games out of the bullpen. His counterpart will be Butler freshman RHP Kyle Allen, who will also be making his first start. The Bearcats-Bulldogs game can be heard live on ButlerSports.com. Following the Butler game, UC will face No. 2 University of Kentucky at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Marge Schott Stadium, with UC's starter TBA. The Bearcats will try to be the first team to top the Wildcats, who have started the season with a school record 21-game winning streak and are the last remaining unbeaten team in NCAA Division I baseball. SETTING THE SCENE
-After winning eight of nine ballgames, UC was swept in a three-game series by Michigan State University, Friday through Sunday at Marge Schott Stadium.
-In the series opener, junior center fielder Jake Proctor hit his second homer of the season. Trailing 4-2 in the top of the eighth, Cincinnati (8-6) had a great opportunity to tie or take the lead, but could only muster one run. Proctor led off the eighth with his second home run of the season after crushing a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall that landed into Sheakley Lawn that made the score 4-3.
-On Saturday, UC freshman lefty Zach Morris pitched his second straight quality start, allowing three runs in six innings. The Bearcats rallied for two runs to force extra innings in their final at-bat trailing 4-2 in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell 5-4 in a 14-inning marathon.
-In the series finale on Sunday, sophomore right fielder Justin Glass went 4 for 4 and freshman designated hitter Taylor Schmidt went 3 for 3, but it UC dropped a 9-4 decision to Michigan State, which tagged the Bearcats pitching staff for 16 hits, four walks and two hit batsmen.
ON THE MOUND FOR THE BEARCATS
-Freshman right-handed pitcher Bryan Chenoweth will make his first start of his collegiate career on Tuesday against Butler. In four appearances out of the bullpen this season, Chenoweth owns a 2-1 win-loss record and a 7.50 ERA with five walks and one strikeout in six innings pitched.
-Wednesday's starter for the Bearcats against Kentucky is to be announced.
-Butler was picked to finish fifth out of 10 Horizon League baseball teams in 2012 by the conference coaches.
-In 2011 Butler went 23-28-1 overall and 11-14-1 in league play.
-Butler leads the Horizon League in home runs (11), RBIs (99) and runs scored (113), and is ranked fourth in batting average at .269.
-Junior outfielder Pat Gelwicks ranks first in the Horizon League in runs scored (15) and fourth in batting average (.403).
-Junior first baseman Jimmy Risi is second in the conference rankings in home runs (4) and RBIs (17).
-Kentucky was picked to finish 2012 fifth in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference standings after the Wildcats placed fifth with an 8-22 league record in 2011.
-Kentucky was unranked in the preseason polls, but after a school-record 21-0 start to the 2012 season, UK is now ranked No. 2 in the March 19, 2012 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.
-The Wildcats lead the SEC in batting average (.333), runs scored (172) and doubles (47). They also rank second in home runs (21) and fifth in stolen bases (24).
-Junior outfielder Zac Zellers ranks sixth in the league with a .393 batting average.
-Freshman outfielder Austin Cousino is second in the conference in base hits (34) and tied fourth in runs scored (22) and doubles (9).
-UK pitching is limiting opponents to a .238 batting average and averages 9.52 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched.
-UC baseball head coach Brian Cleary earned career win No. 400 after the Bearcats defeated Chicago State 6-0 in the first game of a March 10th doubleheader.
-Heading into the midweek vs. Butler and Kentucky, Cleary has 402 career wins, which are two away from tying UC hall-of-famer Glenn Sample's all-time UC mark of 404 career victories.
-Sample coached the Bearcats baseball team for 21 seasons from 1961-1981.
SHOWING THE GLOVE
-Cincinnati ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference with a .973 fielding percentage as a team.
-UC's 18 fielding errors are tied for the fewest of any team in the BIG EAST.
-The Bearcats lead the conference in fewest stolen bases allowed (12) and most runners caught stealing (12).
-Senior catcher Jake Saylor is tied for first in the conference with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 119 chances.
-Saylor has thrown out eight base runners this season, which ranks first in the BIG EAST.
BIELEK ON A ROLL
-Freshman third baseman Joey Bielek is currently on a 12-game hitting streak that began Feb. 26 vs. UMBC at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
-During the streak, Bielek is hitting .415 (22 of 53) with 13 RBIs and .429 on-base and .547 slugging percentages.
-Twice during the streak, Bielek has recorded a 4-for-5 game: Game 1 of a March 3 doubleheader vs. Oakland; and the second game of a doubleheader on March 10 vs. Chicago State.
