CINCINNATI – Two University of Cincinnati baseball players were named to the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor roll, the league announced Monday.
Senior right-handed pitcher Nick Johnson (Delphos, Ohio/St. John’s) and junior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph’s) both received the accolade for their stellar performances last week.
This is the second such honor in 2011 for Johnson, who was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on March 14. He earned the recognition this week after pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts on Sunday against University of Louisville. Johnson, who did not allow a run until the ninth inning to lead Cincinnati to a 5-2 win over UofL, is now 4-1 on the season with a 3.44 earned run average and 31 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched.
Spence batted.533 (8-for-15) with one home run, seven RBI and four runs scored in four games started against Morehead State and Louisville. On Wednesday at Morehead State University, Spence batted 4-for-5 with one home run and four RBI.
Cincinnati is making a habit of earning weekly accolades from the BIG EAST in 2011. Last week, senior right-hander pitcher Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the week. Earlier this season senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) made the BIG EAST Honor Roll on March 7, followed by Johnson on March 14.
UC hosts the 2011 Joe Nuxhall Classic at Marge Schott Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cincinnati will play Xavier University at approximately 7 p.m. ET Tuesday. The Bearcats’ Wednesday opponent will be determined by the result of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. game between Miami University and Wright State University. Regardless of the opponent, UC will play at approximately 7 p.m. ET Wednesday.
