CINCINNATI - The good news continues to roll in from the classroom for the University of Cincinnati athletics department, as 17 teams combined to post the best departmental GPA ever. The spring 2014 semester saw 12 teams post a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, while 247 student-athletes (62 percent) hit the 3.0 benchmark. The effort led to a record-setting departmental GPA of 3.125.
"We are extremely excited with the spring semester academic results," said senior associate athletics director for student-athlete support services Dr. Joe Luckey. "Our student-athletes have responded all year to the expectations laid out by our department and the coaches. Achieving at least a 3.0 GPA is the standard at UC and we're very proud of all the teams who earned a 3.0 and especially proud of football, which saw over 50% of the team earn at least a 3.0."
Head coach Tommy Tuberville's football program posted a 2.99 GPA for the semester, putting 15 of 17 teams at 2.90 or better for the semester. That is the high-water mark for the football program, which was joined by women's tennis in having a record-setting semester. Head coach Anglea Wilson's tennis team, which last week was honored for being among the top-10 percent nationally in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate, posted a second-consecutive team record with a 3.584 GPA.
The highest team GPA of the semester went to head coach Janet Carl's women's golf squad, which had a mark of 3.613 led by Andrea Malek's 4.0 semester. The best performance on the men's side came from skipper Ty Neal's baseball team at 3.347, with Kyle Seeger and Woody Wallace both posting 4.0 terms.
The semester saw 26 Bearcats post a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 151 student-athletes hit at least a 3.4 for the semester to earn Dean's List recognition. In addition to the 247 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Bearcats Honor Roll for achieving a 3.0 GPA during the spring, 47 members of the UC cheerleading and dance teams also earned that recognition.
