ON THE MOUND FOR THE BEARCATS
-Junior Zach Isler takes the mound for the Bearcats in the series opener on Thursday. Isler will be making his fourth start of the season after beginning the year as UC’s closer. In his three starts the 6-foot-5 right-hander has been exceptional, recording a 0.82 ERA in 22 innings pitched with nine walks and 17 strikeouts.
-Freshman lefty Zach Morris will start for UC in the second game of the series. In his previous start at Villanova, Morris pitched 5 1-3 innings with eight strikeouts. On the season, he leads the Bearcats in innings pitched with 72.
-Saturday’s starter for the series finale is to be announced.
UC TO HONOR 10 SENIORS ON SATURDAY
-Ten UC seniors will be honored during pregame Senior Day ceremonies on Saturday
-The Bearcats will bid farewell to student assistant coach Jamell Cervantez, left-hander Cory Hough, infielder Kiley Jones, outfielder T.J. Jones, catcher Braden Kline, lefty Brad Mergen, catcher Jake Saylor, volunteer assistant coach Sam Slavik, infielder Nic Spence and infielder Sam Vandenheuvel
MORRIS EARNS SECOND BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
-Freshman LHP Zach Morris was named to the weekly BIG EAST Conference honor roll on May 7, the second time this season Morris received the distinction.
-Morris earned the accolade after pitching his first-career complete-game shutout Saturday at UConn. Morris was efficient all game, needing just 112 pitches to get through nine frames, while scattering five base hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
-The southpaw has now been named to the BIG EAST honor roll twice in 2012. Morris previously received the recognition March 12 for his performance against Chicago State on March 10, when he pitched six shutout innings, struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just four hits.
-On the season, Morris owns a 3.11 ERA with a 3-3 win-loss record and 42 strikeouts in a team-leading 66 2-3 innings pitched. Prior to the UConn start on Saturday, his .238 opponent battering average during league play ranked ninth in the BIG EAST.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
-Senior left-handed pitcher Cory Hough was in UC's starting lineup against Rutgers University on Sunday, for the first time since May 15, 2010. However, Hough was not on the lineup card as a pitcher, instead he was the designated hitter and tied his career high with two hits after batting 2 for 3 and scoring one run.
CLEARY ATOP UC’S ALL-TIME WINS MARK
-Bearcats baseball head coach Brian Cleary earned career win No. 405 after UC defeated Ohio 11-2 April 3.
-With 405 career wins, Cleary surpassed UC hall-of-famer and longtime Cincinnati Reds official scorekeeper Glenn Sample, who from 1961-1981 recorded 404 career wins, 13 of which occurred during the autumn season.
-The career milestone is the second Cleary has achieved this year after he earned career win No. 400 when the Bearcats defeated Chicago State 6-0 in the first game of a March 10th doubleheader.
MERGEN RAISES GAME VS. XU
-Senior left-handed pitcher Brad Mergen recorded two of his best outings of the season against crosstown rival Xavier University in 2012.
-On April 11 when the Bearcats faced XU in the third-place game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic, Mergen pitched a then-season-high 5 2-3 innings, and allowed just two earned runs (three total) with two strikeouts.
-On April 24 at Xavier’s Hayden Field, Mergen set career highs in innings pitched (7 1-3) and strikeouts (seven), while limiting the Musketeers to just three runs, only two of which were earned.
-Mergen owns a 2.08 ERA with nine strikeouts in 13 innings pitched against XU in 2012.
