Baseball Summer League Update

CINCINNATI – Twelve University of Cincinnati baseball players are spending the off-season growing their skill sets in various summer baseball leagues. Team members are playing in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (GLSCL), the Perfect Game League, the Prospect League, the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League and the prestigious Cape Cop Baseball League.

Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) and Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) were each selected for the GLSCL All-Star game. The league’s mid-summer classic was played on July 10 at Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Williams, a junior infielder, plays for the Cincinnati Steam and earned his second consecutive GLSCL all-star selection. He is hitting .274 (23-for-84) with 14 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. During a five game stretch in June, Williams went 11-for-25 hitting for a .440 batting average. On June 29 against the Lexington Hustlers, Williams broke the Steam’s all-time stolen base record (40) passing the record previously held by Ryan Strausborger.

McAlpine, a redshirt sophomore outfielder, represented the Hamilton Joes at the game. He leads his team with a .301 batting average through 24 games. In 83 at bats, he has collected 25 hits with four doubles, five RBIs and 16 runs scored. He has also recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage as the Joes’ center fielder.

A total of seven UC baseball players are participating in the GLSCL including Williams, Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield), Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli) for the Cincinnati Steam, McAlpine and Ryan Atkinson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) for the Hamilton Joes and Woody Wallace (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) for the Licking County Settlers.

Freshman second baseman Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) is spending his summer playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Harwich Mariners located in Harwich, Mass. Happ, one of only three freshmen on the Mariners’ roster, is currently tied for seventh in the league with a .349 batting average through 22 games. He has recorded 29 hits with 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored and has added eight stolen bases. In a game against the Brewster Whitecaps on July 3, he cranked two homeruns in his first two at bats and added a single and a double to lead the Mariners to a 10-3 victory.

Two players, freshman catcher Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and redshirt freshman outfielder Taylor Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), are representing the Bearcats in the Prospect League as members of the Butler Blue Sox.  Clark has played in 42 games with a .234 average while Schmidt has played in 41 games and collected 40 hits.

Freshman infielder Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) is participating in the Perfect Game League as a member of the Amsterdam Mohawks and junior infielder Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) is playing in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League with the North Jersey Eagles. Through 21 games, Quinn has 17 hits and a .262 batting average.
