CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati baseball head coach Ty Neal has announced the hiring of Ted Tom to the staff as the Director of Baseball Operations. Tom comes to UC with extensive coaching experience, having served as the head coach at NAIA Shawnee State since 2008.

"Ted will add a wealth of wisdom and professionalism to our program" said Neal. "He is a great baseball guy who is very well organized and thorough, but most importantly, is a first-class human being."

Tom will assist with on-campus recruiting, coordinate team travel arrangements, schedule future opponents and work to engage the community, alumni groups and Diamond Club members. He also will serve a big role in the on-campus baseball camps.

"I want to thank Coach Neal for the opportunity to be a part of the UC baseball staff" said Tom. "I am anxious to do my part in assisting this program reach new heights and play for championships. My family is very excited to be a part of the UC community."

As the skipper for the Bears, Tom compiled an overall record of 203-193, making him the all-time winningest coach in Shawnee State history. He became the all-time wins leader at the school on April 18, 2014, winning his 196th game. He achieved his 200th career win with the Bears the following week.

Tom led SSU to four 30-win seasons in his last five years at the helm. Included in that run was a 2010 American Midwest Conference (AMC) regular season championship, 2011 Mid-South Conference (MSC) tournament championship and 2012 MSC tournament runner-up finish. The Bears advanced to the NAIA regionals during the 2011 season under Tom.

He coached four All-Americans during his tenure, including the only two first team All-Americans in program history - Phillip Butler (2011) and Derek Moore (2014).

In addition to his duties as the head baseball coach at SSU, Tom also was the Assistant Athletic Director in charge of Academics and Compliance and taught in the Sport Studies department. 

Prior to Shawnee State, Tom spent 2007 as an outfield instructor at the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he also was head coach in the Florida Collegiate Instructional League.

Tom also has prior coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level from Indiana University where he served as volunteer assistant coach during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, working alongside Neal in `06. While with the Hoosiers, his responsibilities included outfield play, coaching first base and assisting with the hitters. During his time at Indiana, Tom earned his master's degree in athletic administration.

An alumnus of Shawnee State '04, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport management with minors in business and sport coaching. As a player, he was a redshirt member of the 2000 team that finished fifth in the NAIA World Series. He earned All-AMC honors as well as the Joe Smith Memorial Award.

Tom is a native of Lancaster, Ohio. He and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Henry and Adaline Lee.
