Postgame Quotes

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well obviously, a great win for our team. A tremendous defensive effort for our guys. We gave up zero back doors for the game. They probably make two back doors a possession, and our guys gave up none. In the second half, we took care of the ball much better – only four turnovers in the second half. We had a chance in the first half to take control of the game, but our repeated turnovers hurt us. We struggled a little bit with their defense, and they are a good team. We made some adjustments and our guys did a great job in the second half. We got into the bonus early and our trips to the free throw line were the difference in the game. We got to the free throw line in the second half a lot.”

On Blocks

“We talked to Yancy a lot about what (Anthony McClain) gave us at St. John’s with blocking. If they challenge more shots and get off their feet, it will make them more of an impact. I think Yancy was really making an impact. He has been practicing on being more aggressive on the defensive end. We talk to our guys about blocking shots or making a great defensive play.“

On The Press

“Sometimes you see the effect in the other team not making shots.  You are wearing them down and they have to set it up differently. It is extremely important as a team that is as affluent as Georgetown. You have to do some things to try and disrupt them. We have tried to do that to everyone we have played here lately.”

On DaJuan’s Injury

“It is always a factor. We lost Larry Davis from a scratched cornea. As the second half went on, it was fairly evident that he wasn’t coming in. We had heard at halftime that he had turned his ankle. Those are things that sometimes when it rains it pours. We all know that Georgetown has won the league the last few years because of great players and coaching.”

On Alvin Mitchell’s Performance

“Alvin’s focus and maturity is much better. Maturity is extremely important for players. Sometimes people want to give up on guys that are playing defense and rebounding for the first time in their life. It is tough and you have to hang in there with guys. The big thing for us is minutes played and guys will continue to improve if they have a good attitude and work hard. He is into winning. Alvin and Rashad give us a little bit of what Jamual Warren gave us last year. You have to have a few guys that aren’t afraid of anything, and it is important on a team.”

On Last Four Minutes

“We knew if we played our scouting report like we should that we would win. We played great defense, and got the win.”

On Beating Ranked Team

“It means a lot to us. We are getting our feet on the ground and letting everyone know we are coming to play. We need to keep playing like this to win. It tells everybody that we play hard. We don’t care who the team is but we are going to play hard. We are going to do what we do best to come out and get the win.”

On Alvin Mitchell’s Performance

“He was great today. He gave us great effort and defense. He did a lot of great things for us on the court.”

Dion Dixon, Fr., G

On Hitting Some Big Shots

“I knew I had to do something because I had a few turnovers, and I knew I had to make it up on the offensive end.”

On Feeling Confident

“I’m confident. At first I was a little shaky, but coach told me to go and just play through my mistakes.”

Rashad Bishop, So, F

On Shooting 45% against Georgetown

“We just took care of the ball. We didn’t turn over the ball as much in the second half. We got open shots and penetrated and kicked it out to the open man.”

John Thompson III, Head Coach

On Three Point Shooting and Other Problems

“We are at the point now where our backs are against the wall. We need to re-evaluate everything. We have to do everything significantly better than we are right now. The timing is unfortunate. DaJuan gets hurt and that is unfortunate. We need to roll our sleeves up and fight. It is simple as that.”

On Decisions in Second Half

“Overall, it was probably better. I don’t have the same feelings sitting here right now than as the last game. We got tied up a couple of times and came down and took a quick shot. Overall, I don’t think guys were just looking to shoot three’s like they were at the end of the Seton Hall game.”

On 25 Minutes for Nikita Mescheriakov

“I don’t know if we have a specific long term solution. He came in and gave us some energy. He got some rebounds and loose balls. The solution is in that locker room. We have thirteen players and several coaches and we need to collectively come up with a solution.”

Chris Wright, So. , G

On Team’s Emotions Right Now

“After the game, we all said we were disappointed with the loss. We have to keep playing hard. We have a lot of games left in the BIG EAST, and we need to do whatever we need to do to win. We had a few bad shots, but we have to stay strong.”
