University of Cincinnati

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Obviously a great win for us to be able to survive the way Providence shot the ball early in this game and to be tied at halftime. We had different guys do different things at times. They kept us within range. We had a lot of good performances but Rashad (Bishop) and Lance (Stephenson) rebounded. The key to the game was Yancy’s second half defense. It was excellent. He did a tremendous job of moving his feet, which is good against Providence because they are so good against the dribble. We worked hard in practice getting steals. We knew we would have to score a lot tonight. If we could have made free throws, we could have been over 100 (points).”

On The Offense

“Other than free throw shooting, our offense couldn’t be much better. We had 17 assists. Our guard play was really good tonight. I thought Larry Davis even gave us good minutes. Dion Dixon didn’t get a lot of minutes because our guards were playing so well. It was hard to get him in the flow. If we continue to take care of the basketball, we will continue to shoot well. Our passing is getting better. We had good guard play from the three that started – Rashad, Cashmere and Deonta. They had 12 assists and no turnovers. Turnovers have hurt us, especially in our road losses.”

On Cashmere Wright

“That’s not just the guy that I talked about, but the guy the recruiting people talked about. He scored 52 in a high school game. He has great quickness and he can shoot the basketball. It has been a learning experience for him. The biggest thing for him was not practicing (last year). He went to an excellent school academically but it is also very small. His high school is not allowed to play the other public schools in Georgia. Consequently, he hadn’t had a lot of real game experience. He didn’t get to play in big games. He played in front of 15 people of friends and family only. I think that hurt him combined with sitting out for a year.”

On Lance Stephenson Not Starting

“There was a thought that he might not even play. He has a lower abdominal strain that happened in practice. He struggled to get loose in walk thru. He came in and shot after the women’s game. He felt much better. I know it bothered him a little bit.”

On Free Throw Shooting

“We won’t be able to do that on the road at Notre Dame. I am a big believer in the law of averages. Deonta Vaughn hadn’t missed a free throw since Gonzaga. Dion Dixon hadn’t missed one in eight games. It is eventually going to catch up. Let it catch up tonight when we have a 14-point lead. If we do that Thursday, we will not win.”

On Breaking Their Defense

“They press on every made basket. We tried to when we come out of the press with a quick pass. They were never able to get set in their match-up zone. We work hard on getting guys to understand on moving the ball for the sake of moving the ball has value. Against match up zones, you have to move the ball.”

Player Quotes

Rashad Bishop, Jr., F

On Playing Up Tempo

“I liked it. That is what everyone on our team likes to do. We have a lot of up-tempo players, and I think when we play like that, it shows off our talents more. We have a couple young guys playing a lot of minutes. When they come in, they come in hesitant because they don’t want to make mistakes and come out. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.”

On Providence Starting 6-6 from Three

“That is how things go in the BIG EAST. Some teams come out hot and then shoot cold. If they fall, they fall. If they don’t, better for us.”

Cashmere Wright, R-Fr., G

On Response After Louisville

“I was just playing my game. Things started falling and that is how it happens sometimes.

On The Style of Play

“I think that fits my style more than a half court offense.”

Darnell Wilks, Jr., F

On Getting a Run

“You have to let your defense dictate it. When we get stops and rebound the ball, we feel like we can get runs easier that way.”

On Playing Better

“It was me listening to what coach says and being patient. When I get the ball, not rushing it.

Providence College

Keno Davis, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“I think I just start off by congratulating Cincinnati for how hard they played. Every game is a battle in the BIG EAST. For us to come in here and get our third road game, it would be tough. We had two tough games with Cincinnati last year, and I think they improved. I think they will be a tough team to beat down the stretch.”

On Cashmere Wright

“I think we had a tough situation when we had practiced a couple hard days against UConn to prepare for it. The battle with them, I felt like our legs were down. With a couple days to prepare, you can work really hard in practice or you can rest and recover to have your legs. Cincinnati is so tough on the boards and so physical that I felt the rest was needed. We didn’t execute as well. With Wright, he had a phenomenal game with five assists and no turnovers. We made him look pretty good, but he played exceptionally well.”

On players performing at each game

“When you go into games in the BIG EAST Conference, teams have talent. There is a reason they are in this conference. When one player has the hot hand, you have to adapt to that. We are learning as a young team with nine new players. We are learning how to react in those situations, and we haven’t mastered it yet.”
