Postgame Notes - Men's Basketball vs. Notre Dame|
Feb. 4, 2009
University of Cincinnati
Mick Cronin, Head Coach
Nice calm "W." Life in the BIG EAST. I am proud of our effort. Despite Notre Dame's past games, they are a very good basketball team. We take a lot of pride in the win regardless of their recent streak. We understand how good they are and how hard they are to defend. I thought our guys did a great job on Luke Harangody. We felt if we could stay even with him and shot the other guys down it would give us our best chance for success. We really made a decided effort to shut down the 3-point line. Larry Davis was really the star of the game. He really defended Kyle McAlarney, and turned around and had 21 points offensively."
On Offensive Performance
"First half, I thought we took some bad shots. We weren't in a great rhythm and it almost got us in trouble. It was really against the game plan. The second half we shot 54 percent, and our shot selection was much better. I thought we made a better effort of playing defense."
On Being 5-5 in Conference
"As I have said, when you are a young team, we focus on improvement not what our record is. Improvement as a team and individual improvement is important. This is a big win, but if you lose your next three, it isn't a big win. We sit in February playing meaningful game as you try to carve out a spot in the postseason. Hopefully that will help raise our focus and intensity."
On Rashad Playing Power Forward
"The last two days we have practiced it. I don't know if Rashad thought I was serious, but it worked out pretty well for us. When you can run a four-out offense, it makes you a better offense team."
Deonta Vaughn, Jr., G
Dominating second half
"We just attacked the basket. We didn't take the first shot they gave us. We played great offense, and we only had five turnovers as a team. It gave us more opportunities to rebound the ball if we missed."
On Larry Davis' Performance
"I think Larry stepped up tonight. He played great defense against Kyle McAlarney, and he took away his 3-point shot. He made some offensive shots, which Larry is very capable of doing."
Larry Davis, So., G
On Tonight's Performance
"I had a long talk with Coach that I have to be more aggressive and attacking the basket. I had to come out and play hard on defense."
On Plan Against McAlarney
"Keep up with him. Don't let him shoot threes. Coach said it was ok to let him go to the basket because our big man could help me out."
University of Notre Dame
Mike Brey, Head Coach
"Well, I thought Cincinnati played really well. You have to give them credit. We are struggling across the board right now. We get the technical and that was a tough swing of momentum. Again I thought Cincinnati made big jump shots at key times, and they all weren't Vaughn; even though Vaughn was hard for us to handle. The beat goes on. We are struggling trying to find something. We will go out to Los Angeles to see if we can figure it out. I thought Cincinnati executed and made big shots any time we put pressure on them."
"You are always looking to try and change things. Obviously, our guards are struggling. We had some timely turnovers from our guards, which hurt us. We'll keep searching and working. It is a group that is hanging in there, and they will come back to work. They have been through a little bit of everything, and there is a lot of basketball to play."
On Luke Zeller Only Playing 10 Minutes
"The game got a little fast for Zeller. Zeller scores for us, but scoring wasn't the problem. We needed some better footwork. When they are ball screening, it was hard to have Luke (Zeller) and Luke (Harangody) out there. You couldn't play zone because they are shooting the ball tonight. I was hoping we could stay in the zone longer, but they were really shooting. They made really big plays, and a couple of our turnovers hurt us transition wise. We only turned it over 8 times, but 2 or 3 of them in the first half led to spurts for them."
On Toyloy and Gates's Performance
"Those guys made him work for everything. They are really good players. Cincinnati is an improved program. Mick has done a really good job. I told him before the game that he is doing a heck of a job. The BIG EAST is getting better."
Kyle McAlarney, Sr., G
On What Went Wrong In Second Half
"Rebounding and defensive rebounding. We got beat on the boards a little bit. They are a scrappy team and they played well. We did a good job of fighting back, but they really held us in the second half."
On UC Defending Him
"They were blanketing me the whole game. It is what I expect game in and game out. They really did a good job of being out on screens and fighting through screens. I really didn't have any chance of getting good looks."
Zach Hillesland, Sr., F
On Larry Davis' Performance
"Very surprised. I think in the scouting report he was averaging about 5 points a game. I think he had 21 points. His shooting ability; he was hitting a lot of mid range shots and it kept them in it. His performance really helped them out a lot."
Luke Harangody, Sr., F
On Getting Worn Down
"I'm going to give that effort every night. Tonight wasn't one of my best performances. I think this team knows is that we are never going to stop. We aren't going to toss it in, and we're going to keep it up. I'm proud of our guys, and the way we handled it in the last minute.
On Gates and Toyloy Defense
"They played good straight up defense. I went into them a couple of times, and I didn't get the shot to go down. A couple of times it faded away and made bad shots."
