Cincinnati, OH - Fifth Third Arena
Tim Welsh, Head Coach
"It's just another day in the BIG EAST. A hard fought game on both sides. Our confidence level has basically been shot in the last month, but our kids have come to work every day. The greatest thing that could happen is we had a week off and off of school. We were able to get into our guys heads and make some adjustments. We shot the ball well from the three tonight, and at times we made some big plays. They made some big plays to take the lead in regulation, and our guys never died. That is what we are looking for."
On Making Tough Plays
"Cincinnati makes their share too. That's what they hang their hat on. I know Mick emphasizes loose balls and toughness. Our kids made plays for once. We got a couple of breaks. We had to hustle. I got in their face early in the second half about going after loose balls. They made a lot of hustle plays, but towards the end of the game when we needed them, we got them too."
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
Mick Cronin, Head Coach
"We played bad defense for the third straight game. We really have no excuse. We really should have done a better job. To have a team shoot 50% on us in regulation is inexcusable. That is why we were in the situation we were in. Somewhere along the line we weren't ready to play. It's confusing to me being as though the situation we are in. All we've talked about, after the last two games, is talking about defending and stopping people. We practiced the last two days on defending. We were poor in every possible area. This team is not good enough to win when we don't play defense."
"When you are coaching a team, it is hard to see a team coming out flat. We lost the game by our lack of energy. We had a lack of focus, and we didn't bring the intensity level that has brought us eight wins in the conference. I ran out of motivational speeches. You try to be calm, try to yell; I went through them all today to get them going."
Larry Davis, Fr., G
"They were available so I took them, trying to win the game. I was trying to help the team win. It didn't matter because we lost."
John Williamson, Sr., F
On The Last Shot
"Tough. I went up and they just came from behind me. I tried to go up as strong as I could because I knew it was a two-on-one situation. It was a tough blow. I thought I had a clear shot, but they came from behind. It came so quick with the game on the line. I tried to get up quick and get it on the rim."
On Providence's Offense
"When teams shoot 50 percent, you are asking for a loss. You need to keep teams 40 percent and lower. When a team comes out shooting 50 percent, it is hard to come out and get a win especially since we are a low scoring team. We really rely on our defense, and our defense hasn't been assertive."
