University of Cincinnati

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Obviously a hard fought game. I was proud of our guys. We couldn’t make a shot for a long period of time, and they continued to battle back. It is a pretty simple game. One team making open shots and the other team not. We thought we’d get to the foul line more than Villanova. Most teams do when they play them. In their losses, their opponents average 35 free throws per game. We did a lot of things well tonight. We took care of the ball. They rattle teams and force turnovers. We just didn’t make shots and dug too deep of a hole. When we did that, it was compounded by their made shots. We came out flat and they put us on our heels when they scored on their first three possessions.”

On Deonta Vaughn

“I am planning on being with him for another month. He is a great player and gives everything he’s got. I thought he had great preparation and great leadership in the locker room. I would have loved to get him a win in his last home game; especially against a great team. It is nice to have some people compete so younger guys can see the way he competes out there. Then they understand how hard they have to play out there.”

On Hardest Fought Game

“In our league, you have some really good teams and it is hard to shut them down. We held them below their average. I thought that we did a great job. We didn’t get down over there. The guys talk a lot about putting personal things aside and do whatever we have to do to win games. The margin for error in our league is so small. I didn’t like the schedule when I saw it originally. It puts a lot of pressure on you. It has been tough on the guys to hang in there with all we’ve been through with missed free throws and close games. We have great energy in practice and the guys don’t hang their heads. These guys are frustrated; I’ve been doing everything I can to not get these guys to jump off cliffs.”

On Offense

“These guys have been through a lot of heartbreak this year. Certain guys on our team, wishing they played more minutes or playing better. I was really proud of their effort. I am trying to search if we took any bad three pointers. Thomas took a bad one early. That is what makes Villanova a great team. Whenever they are down, Scottie makes a big shot. He is the best player in our league; at least he gets my vote.”

On Post Season

“We have to win. When we struggle to score, that is when you have to get stops. The difference is Villanova is 24-5 because on the nights that they don’t make shots, they still find a way to win. We were missing a lot of open shots, but you have to go down there and hang in. Eventually the dam is going to break. But you dig so deep of a hole, that is where our defensive fortitude has to be better.”

Player Quotes

Rashad Bishop, Jr., F

On Getting to Villanova’s Level

“We could take a little advice from Villanova. They have players that have been there, and we can take what they do and learn from it. No matter what happens they stick together and play hard for 40 minutes. When shots don’t fall, we get down and argue a little bit. When we get that out of our system, we could be good.”

On Being Without Deonta and Steve Next Year

“It is going to be a lot more serious in the locker room. I‘m going to try and keep it going. I’m going to miss them on the court, too. I have looked to him [Deonta Vaughn] a lot for my first three years because he knows what has been going on. I look for him every time I’m on the court.”

Deonta Vaughn, Sr., G

On Playing Final Game at Home

“I thought I played it pretty well. It is a terrible way to end your career at home with a loss. No one wants to lose on their senior night. I’m proud of us as a team because we didn’t give up. We played well throughout the game. We know that we need to make shots. (Villanova) did things that they needed to do to win.”

On This Being Hardest Fought Game

“Just keep playing hard and never give up. We still feel that we have a chance if we make a run. We can show people what we are capable of. We have to dig in and play hard when we don’t make shots.”

University of Villanova

Jay Wright, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“That was an outstanding road victory for us. Couple years ago here, Deonta Vaughn just killed us. I was happy to see his senior day. He is a great player. I’m happy to see him graduate and go. I was worried that he was going to take it over. It was very balanced tonight, and we had two great seniors. We rallied this team after the Syracuse lost.”

On Needing A Win

“You lose a game like that (Syracuse) and it was a tough loss. It didn’t kill us, but it was a tough loss. What do you get to recover, it is at Cincinnati. Against a team that is hungry and physical. For us, we rebounded well. They are a very good team. I told Mick after that this league is hard. They are a NCAA tournament team but it’s hard to get the resume in this conference.”

On Deonta Vaughn

“We just said at halftime that we can’t let him go off. We tried to keep the ball out of his hands and deny the ball as much as we could. We tried to get some size on him, and Reggie did a great job on him. We tried to keep Reggie fresh by putting Scottie on him. He is a hell of a player. Every time we lost him, he made a play.”

On Defense

“We got in foul trouble and we were small again. They started pounding us on the glass. End of games in the BIG EAST are crazy. I’d have to watch the film, but some of the things that happened were crazy. It is everywhere. Usually the last two or three minutes, you just try to execute. I thought we played pretty good defense right up until the end.”

On UC Being NCAA Team

“When you are playing them, you don’t think there is any difference. Coming into the game, you are scared to death of them. At the end of the game, we both made great plays, but we have guys that have been there. That makes a big difference. The fact that Scottie can get open at the end for free throws. He always gets open, and Reggie charges, big rebounds, and big plays. Having guys that have been there is the difference because the talent level is the same.”

Player Quotes

Scottie Reynolds, Sr., G

On Getting the Win After Syracuse

“I think that me and Regg did a great job of making sure everyone had clear heads. Our goal is still to be the best at the end of the season. Our job is not done until we reach that job. We just did a great job tonight of everyone staying together the whole time and grinding it out.”

On Beating Cincinnati

“We knew how tough this league is, and you have to respect everyone. This win is a great one and we feel better about this win.”

On Cincinnati Coming Back from 16

“When you have guys like Bishop and Stephenson that can get in like that, it is tough to guard; especially when we were trying to locate Vaughn. It puts another guy out of position. We were constantly rotating and covering for each other. We just kept are heads together.”

On Not Scoring in First Half

“I was being aggressive in the first half, but I didn’t want to force anything. I always try to take my shots when they are there, and make plays for other people. When I find shots that are available, I have to take those ones. I try to stay aggressive throughout the game.”
