University Of Cincinnati

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“I was proud of the guys. Obviously tough come back after what we went through in New York and the way we lost. Our guys really thought we were going to win the BIG EAST Tournament. It wasn’t something I sold to them. They believed it. I was worried about them coming in flat. Randy Rahe is a great coach and I have great respect for their program. I thought the press was important to get ourselves going in the game and get the crowd into the game. Out in their conference, they are like a Pittsburgh. They are really physical. We didn’t want to let them run their sets at us. I knew they would never go away. One thing that is constant for us is we hit that scoring drought. Every game we hit it. During that drought, we were getting good shots but not making them.”

On Expecting Droughts

“I told them that this isn’t our first drought. We started both halves against West Virginia with a drought. I told them to worry about playing defense. We’ll be alright and just focus in on defense. We finally got a shot, and Jaquon hit a big shot. He is a big hearted kid and that is why he was a state champion in high school.”

On Getting to 19 Wins

“It is progress. Getting into the NIT is progress. We came so close in so many games and we displayed the kind of team at times that our fans thought we should be back in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, we play in the BIG EAST which can be cruel to young teams. Onward and upward in the NIT. ESPN2 game tonight helps recruiting and it all helps recruitment of the program. We have to continue to progress.”

On Guys Gaining Confidence

“It is important to get some wins. As a coach you can talk all you want about hanging in there and you are playing well. Even I get frustrated. It is frustrating for all of us to go through close games. To get wins, helps anybody’s confidence.”

On Deonta Breaking Records

“I was concerned about him being the second-leading scorer of all time. I didn’t think that would happen because of our team this year. For three years, he had the burden of scoring the whole season. If he would have played with some more finishers, he would have had even more assists.”

Player Quotes

Deonta Vaughn, Sr., G

On Setting Record

“It feels good to be among one of the greatest in shooting threes and dishing out to my teammates. I knew I was close, but I didn’t know how many I had to get it. I’m glad my family didn’t tell me because I would have tried too hard.”

On Standing Ovation

“It felt good. Coach was trying to be funny about it. I just wanted to sit down and finish our game off together in the NIT.”

On 15-16 from the Line

“A lot of free throws during practice. We focus on it more for the first time ever. We have to make 21 free throws in five minutes. For the first time ever, we finally made it. A lot of people are focusing and making them.”

On 19 Wins Being Most under Coach Cronin

“It is good to see that we improve every y ear since I have been here. That is something Mick and I have talked about as a coach and player. We have done it so far. We have gotten better as a team. The coaching staff has done a great job of getting people who want to play hard. I’m just glad to play with these guys.”

Lance Stephenson, Fr., G

On Getting Back to New York

“Of course it is a goal. I love playing in front of my friends and family. We just have to keep playing hard to get back there.”

On Rushing in the Second Half

“I was just playing hard getting my teammates involved. As long as we won, that doesn’t matter to me.”

On Winning Three of Last Four

I think we are more focused on defense than we were before. We are in the gym being tough on defense.

On Carrying Over From BIG EAST Tournament

“Of course, We are more focused in the game.

Weber State University

Randy Rahe, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“I was really proud of our kids. I thought we fought like crazy, but you know what, it is what this team has done since the first day of practice. I was really pleased with how hard we got after them and how we rebounded the ball. I’m really proud of the fact that we kept fighting and gave ourselves an opportunity.”

On Cincinnati’s First Half Run

“It would have been nice to not have that hole. Part of that was my fault. We had some different press breaker looks. We needed to make some adjustments. You can’t come on the road to a BIG EAST team and turn it over. We gave ourselves a chance and got back in it. It is what we have done all year long. I thought in the second half we got looks and handled their pressure.”

On Full Court Press

“We practiced it a little bit. We haven’t seen a lot of it. We talked to guys in the BIG EAST and asked them about it. They said it wasn’t a factor. We worked on it before hand but obviously not enough. I thought our guys really adjusted to it in the second half and did a much better job.”
