University of Cincinnati

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well like I told the guys, I thought we came out as flat as we could come out. We dug too deep of a hole. We did a great job of getting back in the game. You can’t turn it on and off like a light switch. Jaquan Parker’s injury hurt us. I think Deonta and Cash got tired. Not having him hurt us. That being said, the same story again. We got close and couldn’t make a shot. We had some great defensive stops where we didn’t get the rebound. Our defensive rebounding wasn’t where it should have been. We had too many opportunities to knock it in, and we didn’t.”

On The Rebounding

“Lance alluded to it. I talked to the guys about it. I hadn’t really been a part of the NIT a lot. The teams that really want to be in it will be successful. Our guys wanted to be in it, but they didn’t know what they were in for. As a coaching staff, we were frustrated with our preparation in telling our guys how scrappy they are. If they struggle to score, they are dangerous because they do the little things. Their year has been what it has been because they have struggled to score. Yancy got two early fouls and couldn’t get it going. They made a lot of shots early on. At one time, they were 8-for-12 from three. I thought Jaquon being out hurt us. When you are trying to get over a hump, fatigue comes into play.”

On Respecting Opponent

“We are playing three freshmen, and Yancy is a second year with Thomas being a first year. We have to come back next year with the mentality of a team that shows up every night in their defense and maturity. When we show up with respect for our opponent, we are a different team. I think our guys respected them in the second half.”

On The Season

“I think you summed it up. We continued to progress, really relying on some young players with freshmen and Yancy Gates. A lot of close calls. It is tough when you are so close and building a program from where it was. We have been able to improve every year. Getting close is not where we want to be. That is the frustrating part, but for me, you have to think of the positive. We have to have a great off season. At times, you think we were able to get over the hump and we didn’t. That is where the frustration comes in. Tonight, you have to make a shot at one point.”

On Building for Next Year

“I’ll meet individually with everyone when they get back from Spring Break. The biggest thing is to be able to get enough talent to score the basketball at the highest level. You have to be able to play hard enough at all times with consistent effort. If you can’t, then we can’t count on you to do that, and we’ll find other people that will. Winning teams are consistent with their effort. They don’t have ego, and we worked on those late in the season. Everyone put their ego in their pocket, and played with each other.”

Player Quotes

Deonta Vaughn, Sr., G

On Four Years

“My four years here have been great. I learned a lot about basketball and matured. I’ve done a lot of great things to get this program back to where it needs to be. I like the program and where it is heading in the future. It started with me, Marcus Sikes, John Williamson, Adam Hrycaniuk and Jamual Warren. I get calls from them. They still love the program, and they continued their career. Just what we did to rebuild the program.”

“It was a great four years here. It hit me. Coach Cronin took me out and I received a nice standing ovation from the fans. It is a good way to go out, except with the loss. I get a lot of messages from fans telling me. It still good to know that people recognize me that aren’t even from Cincinnati that I have done great. Even playing against other coaches and it nice to have recognition here.”

Lance Stephenson, Fr., G

On Momentum for Next Year

“I definitely plan to be better as a teammate and player. We are just going to work hard this summer as a team and work on our jump shots and get focused for next year. I think we need to work on shooting and not underestimate other teams. Every team in the BIG EAST is tough. We definitely underestimated Dayton. We didn’t know that they played with that much intensity. Everything that they did was very aggressive.”

University of Dayton

Brian Gregory, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Very proud of our team, and the effort that they played with tonight against a really good team. They have played exceptionally well, and Cincinnati had a great run in their BIG EAST tournament. We needed a team effort defensively and on the glass. You can say a lot about our guys, but they just keep competing, playing hard, and keep fighting. These two guys are prime examples of that. They have stuck together in some tough times. We were able to advance and stick around these guys a few days longer. It is really good to see.”

On Wearing Black Uniforms

“I decided our guys weren’t playing well enough. Our guys talked into going into this game with something different. You know me well enough that the tradition of our program is very important. Our guys are young and want to have fun, and it looks great. The Dayton really pops on the television. People will be talking about how good it looks. We’ll wear the black as well on Wednesday. The guys were really excited when I told them, and they just have to get washed.”

On Playing Bench

“All of our starters logged twenty or more minutes. We got some quality play from our bench. We are at our best when our bench is giving us a big lift. When we are able to stay fresh, our defensive intensity was great the whole time. When they made runs, our defense is what helped us out. I thought Paul Williams did a great job and defended Stephenson well. Our bench has saved us a lot this year, and it is obvious tonight.”

On The Three Shot

“The threes came off some really good triple penetration and extra passes. Our defense and rebounding really created a pace in the early part of the game where we are at our best. The guys made good decisions with the ball. Those guys are able to stand up and knock them down. They were some good quality shots.”

Player Quotes

Chris Wright, F

On Playing against Guys Know

“I had fun out there tonight. Playing against guys you know, they are going to play a lot harder for bragging rights. I played against Vaughn in high school, and they are a good group of guys. Their style is to get up and down and pound the glass and go. Getting out there and playing with those guys, is like high school all over again.”

Marcus Johnson, Sr., G

On Going Inside Second Half

“I wanted to be aggressive. Outside shots weren’t following so I wanted to drive and be more aggressive.”

On Game Being Street Fight

“We knew we had to stop their penetration and guard rebounding. We knew they were going to make runs, but we had to be poised and slow down.”
