CINCINNATI - Junior forward Rashad Bishop scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the University of Cincinnati cruised to a 92-68 victory over Toledo on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Arena. Bishop was one of four Bearcats to hit double digits with freshman Lance Stephenson scoring 16, Yancy Gates scoring 14 and Deonta Vaughn scoring 13 points.
Vaughn became the 12th player in UC history to reach the 1,500-point plateau in his career while dishing out nine assists for the game.
Cincinnati began the first half on a mission, connecting on seven of its first nine shots and jumping out to a 17-3 lead with 15:18 left in the half. Gates led the way during the stretch with seven points. Toledo spent the next five minutes behind the arc, hitting four straight three-pointers and pulling within nine, 26-17, with 9:38 to go. Bishop put a stop to the Rockets’ run with a rebound and a basket and scored 11 of his 13 first half points to close out the period.
The Bearcats handled Toledo’s zone, feeding the ball inside and hitting the jumper for a sizzling 52.6 field goal percent in the first half. Bishop led all scorers in the first stanza with 13, while Stephenson scored 10 points, including his first collegiate dunk on a fastbreak. Freshman Jaquon Parker got his first career basket while senior Deonta Vaughn had a balanced attack with seven points, six assists and four rebounds and the Bearcats led, 49-33.
Toledo opened the second half on an 8-2 run by grabbing three straight defensive rebounds, pulling within eight, 49-41. The two teams traded baskets over the next 4:04 until Deonta Vaughn hit a three-pointer – becoming the 12th player in UC history to score 1,500 career points – and UC converted on a Toledo turnover with a one-step dunk by Gates and the foul, giving UC 63-49 advantage with 12:54 to go. Davis added a long-range jumper to extend the lead and UC’s run, 9-0 over 1:16. Parker hit a fastbreak triple and Gates hit a jumper in the post as the Bearcats continued their run (14-0, over 2:13). Toledo wasn’t ready to go away and went on a 6-3 run, getting as close as they would the rest of the game, 73-55 with 8:18 remaining. Bishop fed Stephenson for his third slam of the game with 1:05 remaining and with just one second left to play, transfer Eddie Tyree got his first UC bucket with a fastbreak layup.
The Bearcats out-rebounded the Rockets, 38-28, and scored 21 points off of Toledo turnovers. Eleven different players scored for UC and the Bearcats shot 52.1 percent from the floor for the game. Toledo was led by Jake Barnett and Stephen Albrecht, who scored 21 and 19 points, respectively. The Rockets landed 11 three-pointers and had 10 points from Justin Anyijong.
