Cincinnati vs. Toledo
Fifth Third Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio
November 18th, 2009

Mick Cronin, Head Coach
Opening Statement
“Well, I thought, offensively, that was the best we have played the last three halves. Both halves tonight we shot over 50 percent because we have shown some patience and had excellent passing. Fortunately for us, we were able to play well on the offensive end because we have a long way to go on the defensive end. Toledo made some tough shots, and some of their guys can make shots. I thought Yancy’s post defense was excellent. We were finally able to get him the ball and score. I was excited about his three block shots which gave us some interior defense. This is the first time someone has thrown the ball inside against us. I was happy with that and our passing, but we still have a ways to go to get to where we want to defensively.”

On Perimeter Defense
“We are a young team and we are still filling the pieces. We are deep and the changing of players makes us not have cohesiveness defensively. As you get that feel and flow as you are changing units all the time, the defensive cohesiveness is not there yet. We have some new players so we haven’t done basic man defense and I’m worried about that. We have different traps that we haven’t used yet, but it takes away from our time. You only have so much time.”

On Starting Two Freshman
“Good coaching in high school is telling Lance Stephenson not to foul. Cashmere Wright had games of 50 in high school. He tried to steal the ball and not stay in front of his man. You are trying to break bad habits and build good habits. Cohesiveness is important and in basketball you have to play as a unit to get stops.  No question that for the younger guys it is newer to them.”

On Starting Fast
“We talked about a lot of things. We talked about respecting our opponent and every game is different in college basketball. In football, you don’t see the upsets that you see in college basketball. Maybe every 10 years in college football but in basketball it is once a week. To win this game, certain things have to happen or we will lose. I’m disappointed that we gave their shooters 11-for-20 from the three point line. We talked about the only way Toledo would win is if their two shooters shot well. Luckily, we played well on the offensive end.”

On Assists
“Two things: happy with the way we shared the ball and put the ball in the basket. Guys were finishing plays. I think something that kept our offensive going was Rashad Bishop’s four offensive rebounds. And I could guess that all four of them he scored on. I thought we worked the ball against their zone and didn’t settle for the first shot. Our guys are working to get a good shot. You have to make a team play some defense and work hard for a great shot.”

On Rashad Bishop Wanting to Score
“He and I had a lot of talks in the off-season about trying to motivate him. He has logged two years of 22-plus minutes in BIG EAST. I don’t care how talented the young guys are, they don’t have the experience come January. I told him you can’t accept that we signed Lance Stephenson and that you won’t play. I’m going to play the players that will get us wins. We can’t lose a guy with two great years of experience. He does things that get us to win. Some things don’t show up in the stat sheet. He is going to be a key guy for our team. He is the best defender on our team. I think Rashad is one of the top two or three defenders in the BIG EAST.”

On Bishop Taking Talks to Heart
“He isn’t a very reactionary guy. He expected me to say that I don’t need him and that he better go to class. By far, as of right now, he has the best grades on our team. No question that I shocked him. You have a two year starter, junior, who has been through the wars, and you have a guy who knows how to win. He will play for you. If he scores for us, we are going to become a whole different team offensively.”

On Different Guys Starting
“I want guys to want to start. I want them to want to play. I want them willing to do whatever they can to start. I want him (Rashad Bishop) to think that he has bigger hopes and dreams that he will spend time in the gym. That is why I do need him. Our team needs him because of his attitude. He is the one guy that you can take out of the starting line-up and he won’t bat an eye.

On Yancy Gates Defense
“Some people forget that he is a young guy. He was extremely active, and it was the best he has ever been moving without the ball. It was extreme progress for him.”

Player Quotes

Deonta Vaughn, Sr., G
“We started off good as a team. We let their shooters get off, which was my fault. I let them go under the screen hand outs. He started getting his confidence. I shouldn’t have done that early on in the game because he got his confidence going.”

On 1500 Points as a Bearcat
“I didn’t really think about it too much. It feels great to be among one of the top scorers in Cincinnati. I look forward to keep doing great things to help Cincinnati get back to the top.”

Rashad Bishop, Jr. F
On Changing Positions
“It is bigger guys that I have to go against. I don’t have to guard quick guards. There is a difference in my fatigue level. I’m able to run longer and better.”

On Not Starting
“It really doesn’t make a difference. I just try to come in and do my part.”

On Scoring More
“I’m being more aggressive. I know the open spots. Luckily, Yancy (Gates) hit me with some nice passes and I made the shot.”

On Be More Aggressive
“I need to help the team put up some more points. I need to be more aggressive on the offensive end. I’m going to bring the defense, and I have been working on crashing the boards more than I did last year.

Yancy Gates, So., F
On Being Easier Tonight
“Just trying to be more active. I watched film with the coaches, and they were talking about me needing to be more active and move without the ball. When the team went zone, I tried to go more active without the ball and I was able to get more looks.”

On Playing Zone
“We worked on it in practice. We were surprised that they started in it, but we expected them to play the zone.”

Toledo Head Coach

Gene Cross
Opening Statement
“I have been to this venue several times as an assistant, and now as a head coach. It seems like it is the same old song. Mick has done a good job of rebuilding this team, and he still isn’t done. They came out and jumped on us. They made shots early. I think we came out a little tentative. They opened up a lead, and it was too hard to crawl back. The one thing our guys didn’t do was stop. They are a good team and they will get better once they figure out their roles.”

On Starting Zone
“This time of year, teams don’t work on zone offense. We have been working on our zone defense and we try to catch teams off balance. They didn’t shoot the ball well the other day, and we thought we might catch them. But they showed us.”

On His Team’s Progress
“We are a work in progress. We shot the ball extremely well, and I have said it time and time again, that we have guys that can put the ball in the hole. We are in a role definition process. Each day I’m encouraged by my guys because I see something new and different from them every day. It is the same for them about me. It is encouraging as a coach. I’m never going to stop encouraging them and making them better. One area we must improve is the defensive end. It is imperative that we get stops.”
