Ed Cooley, Head Coach
"I think for our level, I thought we were a decent rebounding team. I think the difference tonight was turnovers, and I think they have more experience. We had multiple turnovers that turned into easy transition baskets. I think that was the difference in the game. They had some uncontested shots that were right around the basket. We couldn't get easy baskets. That inch can make a big difference coming from the MAAC to the BIG EAST. Our plan was to contain Deonta Vaughn. I thought Cincinnati had a good game plan coming into this. I'm proud of our kids' effort, and I'm disappointed with a loss."
On Defense and Rebounds
"We work on that in practice, and trying to keep people off balance. We took some deep threes and we got some long rebounds. We probably got under them a little bit. When you have a 6'11 giant in there, we're going to get ones that are under him. We got a couple of lost balls. We threaten our guys to get rebounds, but it didn't translate into a win. I'd rather win in the scoring than in rebounding."
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
Mick Cronin, Head Coach
"It's a good win for the team. Best defense we've played all year. We knew they were going to offensively rebound the ball the way they did. John Williamson had a tough game. In his defense, he has to have a root canal so he is playing in pain. We can't play to our potential without him playing at his best. I thought Marcus Sikes, Rashad Bishop, and Larry Davis played better. It's the best game Marcus has played all year. I thought Fairfield's kids played tough. They are a strong physical team that won 13 of their last 17 last year, and they only lost one guy from last year."
"When you look at how many shots they missed, they are going to get offensive rebounds. What I'm disappointed in is our lack of offensive rebounds. We had a lot of guys without offensive rebounds. You can credit their blocking out, but we have to do a better job of getting to the glass. We are a one and out team, and Fairfield had more shots than us. Anthony McClain gave us great minutes, but we have to get him healthy because he's our best offensive rebounder."
On Darnell Wilks
"Darnell gave us great energy in the first half. They did a good job in the second half keeping him away from the rim. He's got a world of talent. He's always trying to listen and get better. His development is going to be a key for this team. He's a guy that can get in there from the perimeter."
Deonta Vaughn, So., G
On Game Performance
"Coach wanted me to lead the transition on offense, pushing the ball in and filling the wings. I like having John Williamson and Darnell on the court at the same time. It takes some pressure off me. We knew they were going to bring the zone, and we really had to look at it. They played zone and then played match up man. We had to watch what they were doing on defense."
Marcus Sikes, Sr., F
"We heard it when we got in the locker room. It was the point of emphasis for the game to block out. It is something we have to improve on. It comes with time."
On Freshmen Play
I'm proud of the young fellows. They work hard in practice, and it is only right for it to show in a game."
