Cincinnati vs. No. 21/22 Maryland

Cincinnati Head Coach Mick Cronin

“It shows for both teams that we didn’t have a chance to get ready for us. Our collective effort on Greives Vasquez was tremendous, that was probably the difference in the game for us. We tried to bottle him up, keep him out of the paint.”

“The whole gameplan was to go to him (Yancy Gates). Our patience wasn’t quite there as far as taking our time to give Yancy the ball down low.”

“He wants to win (Lance Stephenson). Lance’s one weakness is he hates to make mistakes. He gets so mad when the other teams scores, he’s over on the bench yelling at everybody, Yancy is telling him to calm down, the other team is going to score once in a while.

“Guys are worried about playing defense. Guys aren’t worried about how many shots they’re getting. Guys are locked in on the defensive end. There’s no question our guys are trying to restore the Bearcat tradition.”

“We got a chance to put our name on that banner tomorrow. I caught Yancy looking up at the banner during practice, he was looking up at the banner our first day here. It would mean a lot to get our name on there.”

“When you play mid-major teams or Division II teams in exhibition and they have a 5-man shooting threes on Yancy, he would tell you that was harder on him than playing in the Big East. That doesn’t happen in the Big East, now that (former West Virginia Coach) John Beilein is gone.”

Cincinnati Guard Deonta Vaughn

“These past two games have been magnificent. We (Senior Steve Toyloy and himself) can only play this one time.”

“It means a lot to us as a team to see Yancy get 13, 12 rebounds. That’s where his money’s going to be made at.”

“He (Yancy Gates) works out everyday. Even when he’s just sitting in his room during off days, he says he’s going running. You wouldn’t have seen that during his freshman year.”

Cincinnati Forward Yancy Gates

“Maui is the top tournament in the county. And if we could win this tournament and get our name up on that banner forever, it would be a good step in restoring Bearcat history and building up team confidence as the season goes on.”

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams

“Cincinnati has a nice combination of guards that can dribble penetrate and then they have the ability to throw the ball inside.”

“We can’t play that way in the first half. I was pleased in the second half when we didn’t fold. I think our players will be ready to play tomorrow.”

“There aren’t many centers in the country that are as big and as quick as Gates. It looks like they’re very comfortable throwing the ball into him.”

“The problem we had today was when we stole the ball a couple times we got fouled and missed the foul shots or missed a couple layups. When you’re behind by 13 you can’t afford any mistakes. You have to play almost perfect when you have situations that you can score.”

“I thought the second half he (Greivis Vasquez) played really well, I thought that was the best he’s played in probably three games. There’s been a lot written, a lot said, and sometimes that pressure you have to work your way through it.

“He’s (Lance Stephenson) a really good player. He’s versatile. Somebody that big who can put it on the floor, he’s going to be a very good shooter in time. Obviously he’s one of the best freshmen coming out this year.”

“Sure, they should be ranked (Cincinnati). You won’t know until you get into December what the real top 25 is.”

“The first half was disappointing because we couldn’t find a way to play. That’s what we talked about at halftime — forget what plays we run or what we want to do defensively until we pick it up a little intensity level wise nothing was going to happen. And we did the second half but we couldn’t keep it going.
