University of Cincinnati Quotes

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well, obviously a tremendous defensive effort by my players. They did a tremendous effort with their scouting report. When they play that kind of defense, they are going to win every game. A tremendous job by our guys. We have a chance to be a great defensive team as time goes on. Guys are really playing smart right now and making it hard on other teams and taking their strengths away. I think we only had one bad foul when the game was a game. If you would have told me that Yancy would have two fouls and five points, I would have said we would be in great trouble. Dayton’s a much better team than they showed tonight. The snowball got rolling down hill on them. When our defense broke down, they seemed to miss open shots. We have to realize it is one game, and continue to work on our strengths and weaknesses.”

On Rashad Bishop’s Offensive Spark

“He’s worked really hard. I’ve challenged him in a lot of ways since March. He’s worked hard in a couple areas. Trying to give us leadership and his total commitment to basketball and our team. If he continues to score 10-12 (points) a game, it will change the game. He’s so smart that when he makes shot, it makes us really hard to defend.”

On Assists

“I don’t know if Darnell has played a better game as a Bearcat. His defense on Chris Wright and our execution of our switching, it really rattled them. He kept some balls alive and used his athleticism. It takes guys some time to realize how you can be effective. You can always be aggressive and athletic. When Cash gives us great leadership at the point, we will be really good. We have a lot of young guys that have to come into their own.”

On Ibrahima Thomas’s Play

“It was excellent. It was the best stretch he’s had. He took one shot like he was in the rec league. It was good to see him that intense and he held down the fort for us.”

On Getting Team Ready

“I didn’t have to do anything the way (Dayton) beat us in our own arena was embarrassing enough. I was banking on our guys having enough pride. All we had to do was watch the film and see what they did against us. We made some defensive changes strategically. We kept them out of the paint. They had 16 offensive rebounds, but that is misleading because they took 48 shots.”

Player Quotes

Dion Dixon, Jr., G

On Their Reaction To Coming Out Cold

“We really weren’t worrying about them. We were worrying about us.”

On Preparing for BIG EAST

“Yeah, I watch all the BIG EAST teams to see what they are good at and what they aren’t. We are just trying to get better game by game.”

On Yancy Getting His Second Foul

“I wasn’t concerned because we were playing so well early and so hard. I told them we would hold it down until he came back in the second half.”

Darnell Wilks, Sr., F

On Coming Out of Halftime

“Growing up, that’s what happened. We felt that we needed to come out and play hard like we did in the first half. You can see it that we are starting to grow up. We are trying to get ready for the BIG EAST.”

On The Game

“That’s how we practiced. We felt that if we played hard and out-rebounded them, that we’d keep the tempo in our favor.”

Cashmere Wright, So., G

On Having Fun Today

“Coach Cronin told us to have fun. Go out there and have fun and everything else will take care of itself. We accept the mistakes that happened and just played.”

On Being a Floor General

“That’s all I’m focused on this year. Sometimes I may score and other times I may not. As long as I get a good turnover-assist ratio like tonight, then we can win a lot of games.”

On Ending Last Season vs. Dayton

“Most definitely. Coach Jackson he was madder about it than anybody else. He was getting on us in practice. We came out and played hard for him and us.”

University of Dayton

Brian Gregory, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Yeah, I give Cincinnati credit. They played exceptionally well tonight. Their defense and intensity was great. Their defense on the glass really hurt us in transition. We really didn’t respond in any aspects of the game. The most important thing now is how you respond to this. It won’t be an overnight thing. It will be interesting to see where we will be in a couple of months. I hope our upper-class will be able to figure some of this stuff out and move forward.”

On Compared to Last Year

“I said before that this team would be better than last year. I think they are deeper and share the ball better. At times, they weren’t as good defensively as they were this year. I think Mick would agree that they have a long way to go. I like their depth and their length in a lot of different areas. I think they will have a very good year.”

On Not Getting Going on Offense

“We had dome pretty good looks at the basket. In some cases we could make any shots, and in some, their defense had a lot to do with it. We lost our poise and composure a little bit on offense.”
