University of Cincinnati vs. Miami University

December 10, 2009, US Bank Arena

University of Cincinnati

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“We all know how hard it is to play against them. My fear was my freshman and sophomores not having played against them. I feared that we wouldn’t show them great respect because of their record. We looked a little sluggish off the lay-off, but it is because they get back on defense. They are solid in all the fundamentals of the game. They expose your weaknesses. Our defense can’t be much better. They scored 12 points after the game was over. Offensively, we have a way to go. We only had eight assists but that was because of Miami. Trust me, I am glad we won. I was very concerned with this game due to the lay off and the Xavier game on Sunday.”

On Defense

“We were able to wear them down. We were able to cause Kenny Hayes to miss some shots. I think we got some key steals, but we didn’t convert lay-ups. We have worked really hard in the nine-day break trying to become a better team.”

On Cashmere ‘s Confidence Level

“I talked to the guys after the game. We play a lot of guys a lot of minutes. We will have different guys leading us in scoring each night. They have hopes, dreams, and aspirations, and they have to think about doing the best they can each night. Some nights you might get 20, and the next six. You have to focus and do the best you can. You have to stay positive because it won’t be easy. Not everyone is John Wall. Cash played the best he has played in the second half.”

On Deonta Not Scoring

“We aren’t looking to make that  pointsa habit. I think last time against Miami he had two. They guarded him close. We tried to get him going, but they were in his shirt. They did a good job of taking him away.”

On the Starting Lineup

“We rotate. We have a lot of good guys, and we have guys giving their all in practice. It isn’t really any more complicated than that.”

Player Quotes

Yancy Gates, So., F

On Getting to the Free Throw Line More

“Coach Cronin stresses getting to the free throw line. If you get to the line, you can score with the clock stopped. I think we were more aggressive getting to the basket. When you go to the basket, teams tend to put their hands on you more. We got into the bonus early and that helped us.”

Cashmere Wright, Rs Fr., G

On Confidence Level

“I think my confidence is coming back. It is more about learning my position and what coach wants me to do.”

On Not Starting

“it doesn’t matter who starts as long as we win at the end of the day.”

On Trap and Full Court Press

“We are a long athletic team. A lot of running and jumping is what we do. We are so long so they have to take time to throw over us so it works in our hands.”

Miami University

Charlie Coles, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well let me say that, coming into this game, I was probably more concerned than I have been since I have been at Miami because Temple just took us apart. I am going to write Miami a $50 check because I really wasn’t at the game, and I know I am paid to be at the games. All last night it kept on coming up every three minutes, Thursday it said Syracuse-Florida and Miami-Cincinnati. I forgot it was going to be on TV, and man was I scared. So, we really didn’t have anything to be ashamed of tonight in terms of our effort.  They put the press on us, and we didn’t do a good job. Kramer did a good job. The one thing he did was he had great courage tonight. I told him he has to keep trying to beat the press and if you throw it away, you throw it away. UC has a lot of good athletes. I thought the difference in the game was the guard out front: Cashmere Wright. He is going to be good because of his name: Cashmere. My mother and father should have named me something like that.”

On Holding UC to 12 Offensive Rebounds

“I noticed in the Temple game that we started jumping better in the second half. It took us awhile tonight, but we had some real rebounds in there. I thought it was UC getting them, and I was proud of our guys. UC has good athletes that are big and tough so I thought after awhile we did a decent job. I would have liked to rebound it better earlier.”

On UC Only Committing 10 Fouls

“Let’s look at the free throws. They shot 32, and we shot 3. No, I have never played against a UC team that was as timid as this team was. Does that sound good? Let’s leave it at that.

On Playing UC

We never beat UC, but I appreciate playing them so much that hey, nothing bothers me with this. We do our homework, and we’ll do better for playing them. It gives us a chance. I’m old school and we used to play them when I played for Miami. Whatever happens happens. My task with my team is to concentrate on my team and find a way to get out of this misery we are in. It is no fun. Someone said tonight we are playing a tough schedule, but we should win some of these games. I think tonight’s game was winnable.”

Player Quotes

Kenny Hayes, Sr., G

On Playing Well Enough to Win

“We feel bad we didn’t win. Right now we are 2-7, and no loss feels good. Some guys stepped up like Kremer and helped on the press break. Nick has been stepping up all year. I think inside we did a pretty good job with their inside guys. Like I keep saying, we have to continue getting better. We have to get over this hump. We get so close and let go at the end. We almost beat the No. 19 team, but it doesn’t get us anything. We are hanging with them, but not beating them.”

On Deonta Being Held to 2 shots

“Last time we played them, Vaughn killed us. He is a big-time player because he hits big shots. Our goal was to contain him and not let him make big plays.”

On Tough Schedule

“We all like the challenge that the coaches give us. It prepares us for the MAC. It doesn’t feel good being 2-7, but we are playing against some of the best teams in the country. All that will do is get us better and ready for MAC play. This is my third year playing, and by far, this is the toughest schedule we have played since I have been here.”

Nick Winbush, Jr., F

On Freshman Lance Stephenson and Cashmere Wright

“Lance Stephenson and Cashmere are two really good players. They might be freshman but they don’t play like it. We had a big emphasis on guarding them. I don’t think they killed us, but there was other stuff. Yeah, they kind of killed us, but they are good players. We kind of beat ourselves in some areas.”
