University of Cincinnati vs. Utah Valley State University Postgame Quotes

University of Cincinnati Quotes

Mick Cronin, Head Coach

Opening Statement

“Well, probably as well as you can play offensively in the first half. 56 points and only 1 turnover and it was an offensive foul on Ibrahima Thomas. It wasn’t our best defensive effort of the year and that is a concern. We forced 18 turnovers, but our half court defense wasn’t what I’d like it to be. Our second unit didn’t give us the quality minutes they’ve been giving us. All in all it is a good win. We have to get back in practice and make sure we continue to improve. Rashad (Bishop) played as well as he could have played in the first half. He’s played well all year, but blowing people out he hasn’t played the type of minutes that he could. He’s been ready every year. He’s given us great leadership by the way he is approaching practice.”

On Rashad Bishop Playing One Position

“That’s helped him. It’s hard for people to understand. The guy has played the 1, 3 and 4 for us. The suspension helped him. It was a wakeup call for him to take ownership of his career and really look in the mirror. I’ve been asking him for years to want to be a better player. He’s always been a willing defender, a smart player, but I wanted him to be better offensively. It is unfortunate that I had to suspend him to get that. I think Darren (Savino) has helped him – Darren being from New Jersey. They’ve taken a lot of time shooting.  I give a lot of credit to Rashad.”

On Finding the Open Look

“We’ve been working hard on this for awhile. I told people that if we took care of the basketball that we wouldn’t struggle to score. I wasn’t worried about scoring; other people would. I’m more worried about our mental and physical toughness because of the conference we play in.”

On Free Throws

“The problem is we are shooting three-point shots the same way we shoot free throws. Ibrahima (Thomas) needs to shoot the ball one way. He is shooting the ball different. He needs to get one stroke at the line. Darnell (Wilks) has a better shot than that.”

On Taking a Week Off

“You should be fresh after a week off. We have to make sure we are getting better. This is probably our worst defensive game of the year. We turned them over, but they shot 48% against us. You have to develop killer instincts. We have to practice playing 40 minutes and suffocating a team for 40 minutes. That has to be our identity. When every shot is going in like in the first half, it is coming too easy for us and we lost our identity. It’s good the ball goes in, but you can’t stop defending. “

Player Quotes

Cashmere Wright, So., G

“Some people just relaxed. Some people play hard all the time. We have to go back and see where we need to improve.”

On Rashad Going 7-7 from the Field

“I think he is relaxed. He’s focused. He takes his time on his shot. He isn’t rushing. He has it in his mind that he is going to make it. It’s a big lift when he is making shots and when Dion and everybody is making shots.”

On Missing a Dunk

“I saw behind me so I hesitated to do it. I had it in my mind that I was going to do it. So I jumped and then I realized I was too far. I thought oh well. After I missed, I realized I should have laid the ball up. Coach laughed at me.”

Rashad Bishop, Sr., F

On Hot Start

“We worked hard on shooting the past couple of days. It shows tonight. We were taking good shots and making the extra shots. If we continue to do that, we will make shots. That is what we try to do every game. If we see someone with the better shot, we’ll take the extra pass.”

On Playing Harder Competition

“Well, we just want to take every game one game at a time. We really want to get into BIG EAST play and show everybody that we can compete.”

On Going 7-for-7

“It was unbelievable. I didn’t expect all the shots to go in. I mean I did, but I didn’t.”
