Cincinnati Quotes

Mick Cronin, Cincinnati head coach

On the game: “It wasn’t a pretty shooting night for either team. Fortunately we were able to cause enough points off turnovers, we had 22 points off turnovers, that was probably the difference in that game. We were plus seven in that category, gave us some more points in the paint. A couple more free throws than them in a grind it out win. Whenever you win on the road, you got to be happy. We were playing in Oklahoma and we got the win.”

On Oklahoma: “I thought their guys played really, really hard. We both missed open shots from guys who normally make shots, for both teams. We always say, you got to win when you miss shots—We found a way to win when we miss shots. It wasn’t our best game by any stretch, but whenever you can win by ten and not particularly play well you got to be happy as a coach. I give Oklahoma some credit for that, I thought their defense was pretty good. They did a lot different thing to try and change it up on us and make it difficult to score and give us different looks.“

Sean Kilpatrick, Redshirt Freshman Guard

On future improvements: “There’s still a lot more ball to play, we still got to keep grinding. Coming to practice hard, just listening to what Coach (Cronin) says. He’s been in these types of situations for a long time. Just keep listening to him and keep executing our offense and we should be fine.”

Ibrahima Thomas, Senior Forward

On the win: “I think it meant a lot to us. It’s like [Gates] said, we have a lot of critics but we are not listening to that. We just got a schedule like everybody else. We’re going to play our schedule and try and win every game.”

Yancy Gates, Junior Forward

On the road win: “Coming here and winning is big for us. It’s one of the known teams we’ve played this season and to come on the road and win like this, it’s real big for us. We have another road game on Tuesday, so to be able to get this under our belt will help us for Tuesday.”

On the Cincinnati schedule: “Critics are going to be critics. We never really worried about them saying that, but to come here and get a win. It kind of opened up their eyes a little bit.”

Oklahoma Quotes

Jeff Capel, Oklahoma head coach

On the game: “Congrats to Cincinnati. It was an ugly game from both sides. We, as a team, couldn’t make a shot. I don’t know if that was good defense or just really bad offense. It was an ugly game. I thought the first four or five minutes, I don’t if we can get better shots. If we knock down a few of them, maybe it’s a different story down the stretch.”

On Oklahoma’s effort: “I was proud of our guys for how we fought. I thought we fought throughout the game. I thought we did a decent job defensively throughout the game. We’re getting better, even with the way shot it, our three leading scorers, being a combined 8-28. It’s still a two possession game there with four or five minutes to go. We’re right there. Costly turnovers were a key point that really hurt us. We’ll keep fighting and we’ll keep working and we’ll keep getting better.”

On Oklahoma’s turnovers: “They all kind of came in a row. We had three in a row when it was a two point game and all of a sudden, it’s 10. Three turnovers right in a row. I think they’re unforced. We mishandled the ball twice trying to make a pass and not having the awareness to their switching. That’s an area we have to continue to work with our guys and we have to get better and we have to do a better job in practice of getting them to understand.”
