Post Game Quotes

Cincinnati (10-3)      45

Memphis (8-3)           60

Mick Cronin

Cincinnati Head Coach

“We’re just not good enough yet. If you hold a team to 60 points, with as much athleticism as Memphis has and hold them to 37.5 percent shooting, we should have a chance. You can’t have 20 turnovers though. We had some guys that looked really shaky with the basketball tonight. Of course, we’re starting two freshmen, and we have a long way to go as far as being able to go on the road with success.”

“Turnovers killed us, and we don’t block out. Then, we don’t go get the ball when we do block out. We have to go get the ball with some intensity and ferocity. It breaks your back and wears you down when you can’t get out on fast breaks and get easy baskets when we don’t get a rebound.”

“We’re a young team and we’re still learning, but we’re not going to give up. It’s all a fight and we have 18 fights to go in the Big East play. We have to learn how to play with more tact with the basketball and when we get the ball into the hands of the people that we went to have the basketball they have to be effective.”

John Calipari

Memphis Head Coach

“After two days of truly absolute vicious practices, we played, but not everybody. We played with the type of energy we needed to play with. We laughed and said Tyreke (Evans) could have had a quadruple double because he almost had 10 turnovers, but it was his first start at point guard and I was on him. The only thing he has to do is jump shot. Quit leaving your feet. Jump in that line and jump shot. If you can’t get to the rim for a layup, jump shot. But it’s not his habit. We worked two days on his jump shot. Obviously, he didn’t jump shot. Each week that goes by I hope you’ll see him get better and better.”

“We played great defense. We out-rebounded a team that is one of the best rebounding teams in the country, and we out-rebounded them by 12. We had 21 offensive rebounds. They’re the best offensive rebounding team in the country, and we out-rebounded them offensively. It’s just effort and energy.”

“That’s what I’ve been begging these guys for. Let me just tell everybody, this is who we are. We are going to shoot 34 percent some games. What do you want me to do? What do you want us to do? This is who we are. That means that if you come with energy you can still win the game. Now there is another game that we’ll go 9-for-18 and we’ll beat somebody by 40. There’s going to be other games that we go 2-for-18. How about this one? 1-for-18. Let’s just hope it’s not 0-for-18. We have to win the game anyway. Let’s just accept what we are. Make them tougher to the point that they’re fist fighting in practice. Do what you’ve got to do to get them tougher. If we do that, the rest of this stuff will take care of itself.”

“We need senior leadership and Antonio (Anderson) showed it today. He had some courage on some shots. In transition, he pulled up.  And we have other guys wide open and no one near them and they’re shooting air balls. I’m trying to get Tyreke in that bunch.”
