PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Cincinnati freshman point guard Cashmere Wright was named the BIG EAST Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today. It is the third time this season UC has earned the honor with freshman Lance Stephenson earning the first two.
Wright led the Bearcats to a 92-88 victory over Providence last Saturday, Jan. 30, with a career-high and team-high 24-point performance, his second consecutive double-figure scoring game (12 points at Louisville). Wright, who was 9-of-11 from the field vs. the Friars, also added a career-high three steals and equaled his career high with five assists. He had no turnovers in 30 minutes.
Junior forward Rashad Bishop and Wright helped UC stave off Providence's hot shooting to start the game as the two combined to score 15 of UC's first 16 points over the first 5:30 of the game.
Wright, who missed last season with a knee injury, is sixth on the team in scoring (5.8 ppg) and third in assists (2.0 apg).
The Bearcats travel to Notre Dame on Thursday, Feb. 4 for a mid-week game on ESPN at 9 p.m. before returning home on Sunday, Feb. 7 to take on nationally-ranked Syracuse at 2 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
