Men's Basketball Traveling to the Bahamas in August|
June 19, 2014
The University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team will travel to the Bahamas August 12-17 to face a Bahamian professional basketball team, conduct an intrasquad scrimmage and gain valuable practice time.
Cincinnati will take on the PJ Stingers at Nassau’s 2,500-seat Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium on August 15. The following morning the Bearcats will hold an intrasquad scrimmage.
The Bearcats will start practicing during the week of July 28 in preparation for the trip. NCAA rules allow for 10 days of practice prior to departure.
“With so many new faces on the roster this trip allows us the opportunity to get some extra practice time, build team chemistry and get a head start for the coming season,” UC head coach Mick Cronin said. “We’re excited to bring the team together for this trip. The practice time will be invaluable to our development.”
College teams are allowed one foreign trip every four academic years according to the NCAA. Cincinnati’s last trip outside the United States came in 2010 when the Bearcats traveled to Ottawa, Canada, for contests with McGill, Carleton and the University of Ottawa.
The 2014-15 Bearcats squad will return six lettermen, including a pair of starters (Shaquille Thomas and Ge’Lawn Guyn), and welcome five newcomers and two redshirt freshmen. Last season, Cincinnati won a share of the American Athletic Conference regular-season crown and advanced to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament while posting a 27-7 overall mark and 15-3 league record.
Fans interested in attending should contact Winona Shaw-Gunn in the UC men’s basketball office at 513-556-0697.
