The family of former Cincinnati basketball star Derrek Dickey has organized a memorial service in Cincinnati for Saturday, July 5.
The service will be held at 3 p.m. at Purcell Marian High School, Derrek's high school alma mater.
Dickey, a star for the Bearcats in the early 1970's, died last week at his home in Sacramento. He was 51.
Dickey was UC's leading rebounder in all three seasons as a Bearcat (1971-73), earning team MVP honors as a junior. He played in the NBA for five seasons, helping Golden State sweep the Washington Bullets for the 1975 title.
A member of the school's athletic hall of fame, Dickey began his career as a basketball analyst covering Cincinnati games in the early 1990's for WXIX-TV 19. He went on to work for ESPN, the Chicago Bulls and the Sacramento Kings.
Dickey's parents, John and Ola Dickey, are organizing a memorial scholarship at Purcell Marian in Derrek's honor.
