Here's a closer look at Cincinnati's nonconference opponents for the 2012-13 season:

UT Martin (Nov. 11 at Fifth Third Arena) – UT Martin enters its fourth season under head coach Jason James, who served as an assistant coach at Martin for seven seasons … the young Skyhawk squad turned in a 4-27 overall record last season with only one senior on the team … forward Myles Taylor was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team after averaging 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 2011-12 … the Skyhawks also return swingman Mike Liabo, who averaged 15.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a year ago … UC leads the series 2-0 with the Bearcats winning the last meeting 67-49 on Nov. 11, 2006 at Fifth Third Arena.

Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 13 at Fifth Third Arena) – MVSU looks to build off last season’s 21-13 overall record which included a SWAC regular season championship and a 2012 SWAC Tournament Championship … after earning an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the Delta Devils fell 59-58 to Western Kentucky in the first round … UC and MVSU have met once previously, a 74-48 Bearcats win in 1999.

North Carolina A&T (Nov.  18 at Fifth Third Arena) – The Aggies return forward Adrian Powell who averaged 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 2011-12 … A&T will try to continue the rebuilding process in 2012-13 after a 12-20 overall record last season under the guidance of new head coach Cy Alexander … Alexander has coached in the MEAC previously with 16 seasons as head coach at South Carolina State and most recently six seasons as head coach at Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference … UC leads the series 3-0,including a 105-69 decision in the last meeting, Dec. 30, 2005 at Fifth Third Arena.

Campbell (Nov. 20 at Fifth Third Arena) – The Camels return senior guard Darren White who averaged 16.8 points and 2.1 assists en route to being named to the Big South All-Conference First Team … Campbell also returns sophomore guard Trey Freeman who averaged 13.9 points and 3.83 assists and was named Big South Freshman of the Year and was selected to the Big South All-Freshman Team by the league’s coaches … Campbell closed the 2011-12 season with a 17-15 overall record and a third place finish in the Big South … this will be the first meeting in series history.


 

 

Iowa State (Nov. 23 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.) – Picked No. 34 in Dick Vitale’s Preseason Top 40 for 2012-13 … the Cyclones are projected as an at large team in the 2013 NCAA Tournament in Joe Lunardi’s preseason Bracketology … Iowa State returns forward Melvin Ejim who averaged 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds and welcomes Michigan State transfer guard Korie Lucious who averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 assists for the Spartans in 2010-11 … the Cyclones finished 2011-12 with a 23-11 overall record and a third-place finish in the BIG 12 … Iowa State advanced to the third round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion Kentucky 87-71 … Iowa State enters the third season of the Fred Hoiberg era, who is an Ames, Iowa native and a Cyclone basketball legend as well as a 10-year NBA veteran and former executive with the Minnesota Timberwolves … Cincinnati leads the all-time series 2-1, winning the last meeting 75-60 on Nov. 28, 1999 in the Big Island Invitational Tournament in Hilo, Hawaii.     

UNLV (Nov. 24 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.) – [Potential Opponent] – Joe Lunardi’s preseason pick to receive an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament … UNLV is ranked No. 23 in ESPN.com’s Preseason Top 25 and No. 30 in Dick Vitale’s Preseason Top 40 … it’s 2012 recruiting class was ranked No. 13 in CBSSports.com’s recruiting rankings … UNLV enters year two of the Dave Rice era at UNLV following an impressive 26-9 overall record in his first season at the helm … the Runnin’ Rebels secured a third place regular-season finish in the Mountain West Conference and an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament before falling to Colorado 68-64 in the second round … UNLV returns forward Mike Moser who averaged 14 points and 10.5 rebounds. He was named to the MWC All-Tournament Team and First-Team All-Mountain West … UNLV also returns guard Anthony Marshall who averaged 12.2 points and 5.1 rebounds and was named Second-Team All-Mountain West and selected to the MWC All-Defensive Team … transfers Bryce Jones (USC) and Khem Birch (Pittsburgh) will be eligible to play this season. 

Oregon (Nov. 24 at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.) – [Potential Opponent] – Oregon was picked No. 37 in Dick Vitale’s Preseason Top 40 for 2012-13 … Dana Altman is in his second year as Ducks head coach after producing a 24-10 record last season and an appearance in the National Invitational Tournament  … it marked  the Ducks’ second postseason appearance in as many seasons after winning the College Basketball Invitational in 2011 … Oregon returns forward E.J. Singler who averaged 13.6 points and 5.6 rebounds and was named Second Team All-Pac 12 … Oregon and Cincinnati have met only once previously, a 77-52 Bearcats win on Dec. 17, 2002 in the Jimmy V Classic at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J.

Alabama (BIG EAST-SEC Challenge Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at Fifth Third Arena) – Alabama was picked No. 28 in Dick Vitale’s Preseason Top 40 for 2012-13 … The Crimson Tide finished 2011-12 with a 21-12 overall record and reached the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament before falling to Creighton 58-57 … head coach Anthony Grant enters his fourth season at Alabama with a 59-38 overall record … The Crimson Tide return junior guard Trevor Releford, who averaged 12 points and 2.8 assists in 30 starts a year ago … Releford earned second team All-Southeastern Conference honors as voted on by the league’s coaches and was named Honorable Mention All-SEC by the Associated Press … the all-time series is tied at 1-1 with the Bearcats securing a 77-74 overtime win on Dec. 22, 2000 in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Arkansas-Little Rock (Dec. 6 at Fifth Third Arena) – The Trojans turned in a 15-16 overall record and were Sun Belt West Division Champions in 2011-12 … UALR returns Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection forward Will Neighbour, who averaged 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 2011-12 … head coach Steve Shields enters his 10th season at the helm at UALR. He became the school’s all-time winningest coach last season … UC will be playing UALR for the first time in series history.  

Maryland Eastern Shore (Dec. 8 at Fifth Third Arena) – The Hawks look to improve on last season’s 7-23 overall record with three key returners … UMES welcomes back guard Percy Woods (10.9 points), guard Louis Bell (7.9 points) and guard Ishaq Pitt (7.0 points and 3.2 assists) who was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team in 2011-12 … the matchup will be the first in series history.   

Marshall (Dec. 15 at Charleston Civic Center) – Marshall enters its third season under head coach Tom Herrion who has accumulated a 43-26 record at MU… the Thundering Herd finished last season with a 21-14 overall record after advancing to the Conference USA Championship game before falling 83-57 to Memphis … Marshall advanced to postseason play for the third consecutive season, participating in the postseason NIT where it fell to Middle Tennessee State 86-78 … Marshall returns backcourt stalwart guard DeAndre Kane (16.5 points and 5.4 rebounds last season) and veteran frontcourt anchor  forward Dennis Tinnon (10.2 points and 10.0 rebounds last season) … both Kane and Tinnon were represented on the Conference USA All-Tournament team with Kane also being selected Second Team All-Conference USA … UC leads the all-time series against Marshall 19-12, but lost a  73-69 overtime decision last season  (Nov. 25) at Fifth Third Arena.  

Xavier (Dec. 19 at U.S. Bank Arena) – Xavier finished last season with a 23-13 overall record and a 10-6 Atlantic 10 Conference record … the Musketeers advanced to the Sweet 16 on the NCAA Tournament before falling to Baylor … Xavier returns sophomore swingman Dezmine Wells who started 32 games, averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds and was  selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team … Wells was also named the A-10 Freshman of the Year by Sporting News … UC leads the all-time series 48-31, but Xavier won last season’s meeting 76-53 on Dec. 10 at the Cintas Center … this season’s matchup, newly named the Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic, will take place at US Bank Arena.

Wright State (Dec. 22 at Fifth Third Arena) – Wright State is in the second year of head coach Billy Donlon’s rebuilding effort … the Raiders compiled a 13-19 overall season record and an eighth place finish in the Horizon League last season … the Raiders return sophomore guard Reggie Arceneaux who saw action in all 32 games, averaging 8.5 points … Cincinnati leads the all-time series with a 7-0 record including a 78-58 win at Wright State last season on Dec. 14.

New Mexico (Dec. 27 at Fifth Third Arena) – Ranked No. 21 in Dick Vitale’s Preseason Top 40 for 2012-13 New Mexico finished last season with a 28-7 overall record … the Lobos have averaged more than 25 wins and reached the postseason each of the past five seasons … New Mexico finished last season ranked No. 23 in the final USA Today-ESPN coaches poll and No. 21 in the final Associated Press poll … the Lobos advanced to the third round of the 2012 NCAA tournament before losing to Louisville … New Mexico won the Mountain West Conference regular-season and tournament champions last season … the Lobos return Second Team All-Mountain West performer guard Kendall Williams who averaged 12.0 points and 4.1 assists last season … New Mexico also welcomes back junior guard Tony Snell who was selected honorable mention All-Mountain West and was named to the All-Mountain West Tournament Team after averaging 10.5 points a year ago.
