Postgame Quotes

Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin
Opening Statement:
“It’s always good to win. Two things: never devalue a win and give credit to your opponent. We all saw what happened. I let some guys stay in the game and get some conditioning. I’m not happy with anything, including our preparation -- which is on me. I have some older guys that I have to get to a better place in terms of preparing. I wasn’t happy with practice yesterday or anything. We have a group that really struggles with handling prosperity. ”

On UC committing 20 turnovers:
“Inexcusable. Obviously, I haven’t done a good enough job. I’ve been trying to save some of my intensity. It’s a long year. There comes a point where you have to let guys grow up a bit. They have to take ownership in what they are doing.”

On Cashmere Wright:
“There are guys that are on the All-BIG EAST team that he is as good or better than if he is healthy. He has to go to school and get his degree, and he as to live, eat and drink basketball. I’ve coached guys that never had a bad day at practice and if they did, they were ready to kill someone. Steve Logan was that way here. Reece Gaines down in Louisville, he would shoot the ball until his arm cramped up. Literally, I’m not making that up. I had to pull his arm straight. My message was that our older returning guys are talented, but we have to get them to a point where they are mentally tough and they can withstand what is coming down the road for us. Last year, we had some really tough guys that were out there with them. Right now, it isn’t fair to ask our young guys do that, but I think you are seeing Jermaine Sanders come around.”

On playing with intensity:
“I was unhappy with some guys’ intensity, but the last thing I was going to do was take timeouts and take them out of the game. For us to be a really good team, I have to get Cash, Yancy and Dion to be every-night guys. Those guys should be playing as good as they can play and be intense at all times. They are great kids. Once they saw that we were going to win, that was enough for them. I want those guys to want to be great players. They didn’t rank us as high as they should have, in my opinion. We weren’t ranked as high as we were last year because people didn’t respect our talent. We have to show people our ability. It is my job. You have to get guys to play to the maximum of their ability.”

On handling prosperity:
“I’m talking about individual not the team. I want Yancy, Dion and Cashmere Wright to want to be three of the best players in America. I don’t want them to be happy unless they become that. For us be a great team -- that people really respect -- you have to have really great players. I have to get them to that point. Yancy’s been great all year. I know he’s frustrated. As well as he’s played and there is film on him, people aren’t just going to let him dominate. He’s going to have nights where the ball rolls off the rim, people are clawing, and you can’t stop. That’s really the crux of our season is getting these guys to that point. It has to be every day in practice, every shoot around. Dion Dixon tonight at 4:45 p.m. was shooting. It isn’t easy to be one of the better players in America at the highest level of college basketball. It can’t always be me bringing the intensity because it will eventually fall on deaf ears.”

Player Quotes
Dion Dixon, G
On if he has played 40 minutes in a game before:
“I don’t remember.  I didn’t want to come out. You don’t want to come out in a game. I came in a little early and got some shots. That helped me.”

On offense:
“I was missing shots and was disappointed in myself. I wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again.”

On fatigue being a reason:
“I wouldn’t put it on fatigue. It is our (Wright and Dixon) job to get the team going. And we failed tonight. It’s a long season. You have to come back to practice the next day, work hard, and get better.”
#1 Cashmere Wright, G

On UC committing 20 turnovers:
“We have to do better. We can’t do that anymore. We have to work harder and play smarter. It just can’t happen. ”

On his play in the second half:
“I tried to be more assertive. In the first half, I was thinking too much and not playing. In the second half, I started playing and let things happen. It seemed to work out.”

On how the team can improve:
“We really have to watch film and see what we are doing wrong and correct it. We can’t keep playing like that and continue to win. At the end of the day we won, we keep moving forward. We watch the film and keep getting better.”

On the team losing focus in the second half:
“After we got the lead, we relaxed and stopped playing. When you lose focus, anyone can come back on you.”

Jacksonville State head coach James Green
Opening statement:
“Obviously, we’re more pleased with the second half than the first half. It’s early in the year and their team probably let up after halftime. And we were ready to cut into the lead. I thought they did a really good job of making us get out of the zone early by kicking the ball out and making shots on the perimeter. You give up 58 percent in the first half; you won’t have a chance to win. But they are big, strong and have really good guard play. They have great post play. And for us with one guy that has more than one year of experience, being in this environment was tough.

On Jacksonville State’s focus coming in:
“We thought they would make some shots from the perimeter, but we didn’t know they would shoot the way they shot it early on. I thought one thing that was pretty good was that we handled their pressure pretty decently all night. When you look at it, we had 13 turnovers and some of them were pretty early in the first half. I think there were a little bit of jitters were we didn’t pass and catch. We really thought that we needed to surround (Yancy) Gates and not let him be an anchor in the paint. I thought we did a pretty good job at that, but they just made so many shots on the perimeter. That got as out of what we were trying to do game play. We wanted fewer possessions in this game than you saw. We wanted them to have to use the shot clock. We wanted to use the shot clock, and in the first half, I thought we shot it a little quicker than what we needed to. Mason Legget had a great game, getting to the basket. But we had a lot of opportunities in the first half getting to the basket that we couldn’t convert. Sometime we threw into our post guys and they really didn’t know what to do with it and turned it over.

On the difference between UC and Marshall:
“I think they are a little different. I think this team (UC) is better defensively in their guard play. I think they (UC) are a more physical team. Marshall has a lot of length on the inside. But I think this team (UC) is a lot more physical and attacks the basketball more than maybe Marshall did. I’ll give (UC) some edge on that.”
