Men's Hoops Faces No. 21/22 Maryland in Maui Invitational Second Round

After opening up play in the 2009 EA Sports Maui Invitational with a 67-58 victory over No. 24 Vanderbilt, the Cincinnati Bearcats will face another nationally ranked opponent, No. 21/22 Maryland, in the second round on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Lahaina Civic Center at 7 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN with Sean McDonough, Bill Raftery, and Jay Bilas handling the call. Dan Hoard (p-b-p) and Chuck Machock (color) will call the game on 700 WLW.



Cincinnati and Maryland have faced each other only three times since the series began in 1949. The Terrapins have won the last two match-ups with victories in 1954 (78-61) and 1995 (74-72) and own a 2-1 record. The 1995 game came in the second game of the 7-UP Shoot-out in San Antonio, Texas at the Alamodome.



The Bearcats will take on either Gonzaga or Wisconsin in the third round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Tuesday, Nov. 23 depending on the outcome of the second round match-ups.



  • Maryland, who moved into the national rankings a week ago, moved up to No. 21/22 this week after knocking off Fairfield (71-42) and New Hampshire (82-55) on Nov. 17 and 20, respectively.
  • The Terrapins are 4-0 and have beaten their opponents by an average margin of +30.5 points per game.
  • The difference for Maryland in the first four games has been its defense which is holding opponents to 31.8 percent shooting and causing an average of 21.3 turnovers.
  • The Terrapins have three players averaging 10 or more points, including sophomore guard Sean Mosley and senior forward Landon Milbourne, who lead the squad with 15.0 points per game.
  • Senior Greivis Vasquez is the Terps point guard, averaging 7.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game.



  • Cincinnati picked up its first win in the Maui Invitational with a 67-58 win over Vanderbilt in the first round.
  • With the win, Cincinnati is 6-1 all-time against the Commodores.
  • The win over No. 24 Vanderbilt is the first win over a ranked opponent since Cincinnati defeated No. 25 Georgetown, 65-57, on Jan. 28, 2009.
  • Vanderbilt, who came in averaging 83.5 points per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field, scored just 58 points as the Bearcats held the Commodores to 28.7 percent shooting.
  • Cincinnati dominated the glass out-rebounding Vanderbilt 53-32. UC is now 3-0 on the season when out rebounding opponents.
  • For the first time this season, Cincinnati recorded double-digit steals with 10. Lance Stephenson, Cashmere Wright, and Larry Davis each had two steals apiece.
  • Both teams went scoreless from the field for more than four minutes in the middle of the second half, but Cincinnati remained in front, 47-38, with 10:11 to play.
  • A 4-0 run in the final minute of the first half gave the Bearcats a 36-24 lead entering halftime.
  • Tied at four with 18:13 to play in the first half, UC held Vanderbilt without a field goal for the next 9:46 as the Bearcats went on a 20-4 run to take a 24-8 lead with 9:27 to play in the first half.
  • After using the same starting lineup for the first two games, Cincinnati went to a smaller starting lineup against Vanderbilt with G Cashmere Wright, G Deonta Vaughn, F Lance Stephenson, F Rashad Bishop, F Yancy Gates.
  • From the 13:03 mark to the 10:00 mark, sophomore Yancy Gates scored all 12 of his first-half points. Gates finished 16 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the season and the third of his career. Gates' last double-double was on Feb. 26, 2009, against West Virginia. Gates also added two blocks.
  • Sophomore Dion Dixon came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 10 rebounds, his first double-double of his career.
  • Coming off a career-high 20 points, against Toledo, junior Rashad Bishop scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
  • Freshman Lance Stephenson continued his solid all-around play with eight points, five rebounds, and two assists.
  • Senior Deonta Vaughn, Cincinnati's leading scorer coming into the game, scored his first points of the contest with 6:40 to play in the second half due to foul trouble. He finished with eight points.


  • Cincinnati is 113-166 (.405) all-time vs. opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top 25.
  • UC's 67-58 win yesterday vs. No. 24/24 Vanderbilt in the opening round of the Maui Invitational is its first against a ranked opponent away from home under head coach Mick Cronin.
  • The last time UC upset ranked opponents in back-to-back games was 2007-08 when head coach Mick Cronin led the Bearcats to a pair of home wins vs. No. 19 Villanova (Jan. 12), 69-66, and No. 15 Pittsburgh, 62-59 (Jan. 19).
  • UC is 3-16 vs. ranked opponents under Cronin.



  • In his pregame radio interview prior to the season opener vs. Prairie View A&M, head coach Mick Cronin announced that he is planning to redshirt 6-foot-4, 215 pound, freshman guard Sean Kilpatrick (White Plains, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep).
  • Cincinnati's 53 total rebounds vs. Vanderbilt are the second most by UC under head coach Mick Cronin.
  • The Bearcats are out-rebounding its opponents 46.0 to 30.7 per game, including 53-31 on the offensive glass. Last year, Cincinnati (14.3 rpg) finished third behind West Virginia (15.2 rpg) and Pittsburgh (14.8) in the BIG EAST in overall offensive rebounds and ahead of fourth place Connecticut (14.2).
