UC vs. Eastern Kentucky Quotes
Dustin Grutza: "It felt great to be out there. We prepared well and we didn’t know exactly what to expect from them. Coach had us prepared really well. There is definitely room to work. Coach Kelly’s emphasis is going out there and playing hard. I think we did that. Our first game out we made some mistakes, and I think we can clean some stuff up and make some improvements for next week."
On comparing former UC quarterback Ben Mauk and current UC quarterback Dustin Grutza:
"There is no difference. Dustin Grutza was the quarterback my freshman year so there was really no difference. We were comfortable with him back there."
On Breaking Records:
"I guess it is a good feeling, but I’m not worried about the records. I am really thinking about this season, and making people believe in us."
Connor Barwin: "I had to do a big stick, which means you have to go all the way to the center. I did that, and I saw AD (Alex Daniels) flush the quarterback out so I was already in the middle of the field. I ran him (EKU quarterback Allan Holland) down the side. I was kind of surprised, and I didn’t know how to celebrate. It was exciting to get my first sack."
John Goebel: "I am so honored to be out there. I was really nervous to go out there. They called a few plays and I was giddy. I haven’t played running back since high school. My offensive line did such a great job. It is really different than playing our defense in practice because our defense swarms."
UC Head Coach, Brian Kelly
Opening Statement: "Good start for us offensively and defensively. I liked the way we started. I thought we took control early, and we left little doubt. When we talk to our football team, Eastern Kentucky has a lot of tradition. One of the things we talked about was not giving them a lot of confidence early on, and we needed to exert ourselves early on. If you give them a spark early on, they will fight you. They fought us, but we really got a foothold early on. Defensively, we really limited their ability to push the ball down the field. Clearly, Dustin Grutza made some plays for us offensively. It was nice to see Dustin execute a lot of things early on to make us a good football team. I thought we played very fast."
On Dustin Being Quarterback: "I thought he did some pretty good things. Clearly, his ability to make some plays outside the pocket; we knew was a strength of his. He threw okay in the pocket; he has to get better there. Anytime you have a career best; that is the kind of clean work, high percentage work that we have talked about from day one. If he can stay in that type of rhythm offensively, we will be in good shape."
Eastern Kentucky Head Coach, Dean Hood
“I felt good about how hard our kids played…It was a hard hitting game. A bunch of people were running around, flying around, knocking them around a little bit so I was proud of that. I was proud of the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter we didn’t cower, you know I mean granted, Coach Kelly has a lot of class, put his back-up quarterback in so that had something to do with why we started playing better but still I’m proud of our kids for not cowering, and not giving up and not quitting. They still played hard and they still brought it. There’s too many things to talk about what we have to do better. Obviously the thing that hurt us tonight big time was we couldn’t run the football effectively. And we gave up big plays. You know, the first couple of drives I really felt good. They scored on the first two drives but I really had a good feel about the game because we were making them execute their offense and I just always feel that in college football if you make an offense go 10, 12 play drives sooner or later they’re going to jump off sides and get behind the chains, or they’re going to fumble or they’re going to throw an interception. But we just couldn’t get off the field… I felt good the first couple of drives because I thought man we’re hanging in with them and we’re making them execute they’re not just getting big plays on us and then they came back and got two big plays in the secondary, we cut two guys lose. That’s what really hurt us, not running the football and all of the sudden getting the big play bug against a very football.”
Allen Holland #2 QB Sr.
“They got a great defense that we played against tonight. They got two great corners and safeties. They’re fats up front. We had a few bright spots. They got a great defense. I have to give them hats off to their D because they made plays all night. We had third downs and they kept making plays and we didn’t make our plays. It’s an overall great football team.”
“We need to get in the film room and correct the tings we did wrong tonight. It’s not just one person, it’s a whole unit. WE win and lose as all 11 on offense. When one guy messes up it affects everybody. We’re going to get that corrected and we’ll get ready to go for Western next week.”
Cody Watts #5 WR So.
“Me and Allen talked on the sideline the series before and we saw the corner biting down and just kept biting down and kept biting down and he said next time he does it we’re going deep and so we both saw the corner come up and we just reacted and scored. It was a pretty exciting little play.”
In camp he was moved from QB to WR. Thoughts on getting that first touchdown in the first game.
“It feels good especially against Cincinnati. They were a great team. It’s exciting especially all the offensive linemen come and meet you in the end zone 7 yards away that show that they’re ready to play football too.”
