Brian Kelly's Opening Comments:
This was another elimination game for us. We needed to play physical football tonight. It had to be this kind of football game. We had to play this type of game where we forced Connecticut to throw the football. Offensively, tonight we closed out a game for the first time this year in the fourth quarter.
We knew Connecticut was not going to give us big plays. We were able to put some points on the board early, which changed the complexion of the game. They (Connecticut) had been up in games early, so it was important for us to get off to a good start, stop the run and play physical. We did all three of those things tonight.
On holding Connecticut to 22 yards rushing:
We played very well tonight. Our front four was able to put pressure on (Tyler) Lorenzen. Obviously, they did a very good job against the run game. When you can keep a very good tandem of backs in (Donald) Brown and (Andre) Dixon to 22 yards, you are in a good position to win.
On running for 144 yards against Connecticut's defense:
Connecticut is a very good defensive front four. I thought Jacob (Ramsey) stuck his nose up in there and played tough. He was able to grind yards because they were not going to come easy tonight.
On the change in the progress of Cincinnati:
It doesn't matter if it's the first, second, third, or fourth year. What we want to do is continue to build our program so we are competing for a BIG EAST Championship. We came in here with the philosophy that we want to change the perception of this football program. That means we are going to compete for championships. Our fans have supported us very well. We have a lot of work to do with this football program. We are going to play for a BIG EAST Championship. My family was here tonight. I am happy to see this football team win.
