No. 5 Cincinnati vs. Illinois - 11/27/09
Nippert Stadium - Cincinnati, Ohio

Head Coach Brian Kelly
Opening Statement
“This was a great football game. There was a great atmosphere at Nippert Stadium today. It is fun. We played a good football team. I knew that with Juice Williams back that we were going to have a heck of a football game today. They are very dynamic on offense. We knew we were going to have to outscore him today. That is why we had 10 rushes today. We knew we had to throw to win today. It was the game plan all week. From that standpoint, Tony (Pike) for 399 yards, he played outstanding today. At this point, it is about finding ways to win.”

On Isaiah Pead
“He is ok. He has been a little nicked up. I didn’t get a good feeling for him today. I’m on the sideline bringing guys in and out. I just didn’t get that connection today. It wasn’t his kind of game. It didn’t materialize that way.”

On Throwing More
“We were going to throw it all over the ball park today.”

On Zach While Pike Was Out
“I can’t believe you forgot how good he is. He is a really good football player. He sees the field really well, and keeps the ball alive. Tony had to move a lot to stay alive in some plays. He made some great touch throws. We waited for Tony to be healthy because we couldn’t put him in and tell him to live in the pocket. He needs to run for us to win.”

On Ben Being Open
“We caught him a couple of times in pressures. He is going to beat a linebacker every time.”

On Added Motivation Against Big Ten Team
“We shouldn’t be looked at as a conference that is not deserving as a BCS bid. We have proven that on the field. I think you take a look at the top teams in the league and how they have done against competition. I think that is why we have played the schedule we have. Each year we are continually changing the perception of the BIG EAST. You have to play these teams and beat them.”

On Defense
“They are who they are. They have to battle. Losing Drew Frey today didn’t help. We have to get (Wes) Richardson ready for Pittsburgh. We are grinding out there. We don’t help our defense very much on offense. We just want to win. We have an offense; so let them go. We played 21 minutes of offense compared to their 36 minutes.”

On Offense without Running
“I know our personnel and the guys that can put points on the board. I really don’t care what it looks like as long as we have more points. We had to push the pace today and be really aggressive.”

On Kickoff Returns
“I thought we had two or three opportunities where we could break into the open. Jake (Rogers) was outstanding today. He kicked the ball into the wind extremely well. We felt like we had an advantage in special teams, and it really showed.”

On Pittsburgh
“They are well coached and have an excellent defensive line. They have balance on offense that they haven’t had in years past. They are a better football team than last year from what I have seen. I would have preferred them to lose a game. But December 5th told us that we would have to be at this all year because it would come down to the last game.”

Player Quotes
Ben Guidugli, Jr., TE

On Why Being Open
“The big play was really a broken play. Tony made the play by opening the pocket. He made the throw, and I made the play. The other players were plays we had run in practice. He had confidence that I could make plays.”

On Gino Guidugli Being At Game
“I think he knew he (Tony Pike) broke the record. He was happy that I was a part of it. He is living through it and loving it more than anything. I don’t think he has any bad feelings about it.”

JK Schaffer, So., LB
On Defense
“For most part I think we did a good job, especially on third downs. A couple things that hurt us were broken plays. They had big gains. We knew coming in that they had a ton of offensive skilled weapons so we knew they would get some. We did a pretty good job besides a couple of broken plays.”

On Throwing Nonstop
“We always joke about how we are always on the field because the offense scores so fast. That is what it takes to be a team. Towards the end of the game, the offense did a good job of running the ball and staying in bounds.”

Tony Pike, Sr., QB

On Being Back
“It is awesome to be back. It makes it a little easier when you have a guy like Zach (Collaros) step in the last couple of weeks. Mentally you have to know you are alright. The way Zach played is awesome, and when you have weapons like that, it makes it easier.”

On The Arm
“I was ready. Sitting for so long, you just want to get back out there and start playing. It felt fine today and right now. I fell on it a few times and got a few hits, but I’m ready to move on.”

On Six TD Passes
“Really it is indescribable because of the journey the seniors have been on. We have been on some ups and downs. Getting Mardy (Gilyard) 100 yards again, words can’t describe how amazing this feels to share this with the team.”

“He is the guy that gets the accolades. But what Mardy gets, he deserves every bit of it. To see what he has done and to break a record, I couldn’t be happier for him. He puts the team first. If he doesn’t get the ball, he doesn’t complain. That is Mardy. I couldn’t be happier for him. He deserves all the accolades and recognition.”

Mardy Gilyard, Sr., WR
On Record
“I just prayed that I kept my mind clear to not focus on the record (career touchdown receptions). I knew it was going to come eventually. I have been tied with Goody (Dominick Goodman) for awhile. We just went out there and had fun. Just played and not worry about things. If we worry, we don’t play like ourselves.”

On Tony Pike
“It’s amazing how Pike and Zach (Collaros) have handled the whole QB thing. Zach is the first person on the field when Pike threw the TD. I don’t’ know if anyone else noticed but me. They really enjoyed each other, and I think it is a key component that makes our team special.”

On Today’s Emotions
“It was all going through my head. I was thinking about how when I got here and not having a scholarship. Playing that first year, when I couldn’t run a hitch. I couldn’t really do anything back then. I just watched myself, over the years, grow up into the players and man I am now. I looked at my mom that she helped me. These past five years have been the best of my life. It has been the best experience I have ever had. I told Pike, especially, thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Prior to kick off, I was extremely nervous. I told myself I had to do something better to go out with a bang.”

On Pittsburgh Game
“We know this is our biggest game of the season. It wasn’t easy to get to 11-0, but 11-0 won’t matter if we don’t beat Pitt. Our goals won’t matter if we lose to Pitt. We know we have to take care of business. If we take care of the business, the rest is up to the computers and voters. We treat Pitt like a regular game. The best team is going to win.”
