CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati head football coach Butch Jones named seven assistants to his staff for the 2010 season Friday.

Jones, who was named head coach on Dec. 16, 2009, added co-defensive coordinators Tim Banks and Jon Jancek, assistant head coach/defensive line coach Steve Stripling, running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Mark Elder, tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Phil Zacharias, and offensive line coach Don Mahoney to the staff. Dave Lawson will head the football strength and conditioning program.

Banks, Elder, Lawson, Mahoney, Stripling, and Zacharias served under Jones on the Central Michigan University staff in 2009 while Jancek joins UC from the University of Georgia where he was co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2009.

"I'm pleased with the staff we've put together here at UC," Jones said. "I always look to surround myself with coaches who are passionate about life and what they are doing, those who value family, and a high level of expertise. We've added great teachers of both football and the game of life, coaches who value family and coaches who are experts in their field."

It was previously announced that Jones retained associate head coach/defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs from the previous staff. Coombs is entering his fourth year at UC.

Banks joins the UC staff after three years as the defensive coordinator at CMU. His 2009 CMU defense led the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (18.9), ranked second in rushing defense (122.8), third in pass efficiency defense (117.4), and fourth in total defense (344.2). He returned to his alma mater after spending three years at the University of Maryland. His previous stops include the University of Memphis, and Bowling Green State University.

Elder, a Cincinnati native, will transition to the offensive side of the ball after coaching linebackers for three years at CMU. During his three years with the Chippewas, at least one of his linebackers earned all-MAC honors each season. He made previous stops at Michigan, Wayne State, Iona, and Akron.

Jancek was at Georgia from 2005-09, coaching linebackers before assuming the role of co-defensive coordinator in 2009. During his time at UGA, the Bulldogs won 48 games, one SEC championship, been to two BCS bowl games, and finished in the nation's top ten three times. The 20-year coaching veteran coached previously at Central Michigan, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, UCF, and Wayne State. Lawson was the director of strength and conditioning at CMU for three years, directing the strength and conditioning efforts for all 16 varsity teams while working closely with football. He has coached seven Strength and Conditioning All-Americans, eight football All-Americans and more than 80 football players either drafted or signed as free agents by the National Football League. In 2009, Lawson was recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach, the highest honor presented in the field, by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa). He also spent five years at Eastern Michigan University, and seven years at West Virginia University.

Mahoney spent three years at CMU coaching the offensive line, which featured a pair of all-Mid-American Conference selections in each of his three seasons in Mount Pleasant. It was the second stint at CMU for Mahoney who was at CMU from 1993-98 before serving six years (1999-2006) as the offensive line coach at Tulane University.

Stripling most recently led the Chippewas to a 44-41 double overtime win over Troy in the GMAC Bowl. The interim head coach at CMU took the reins of the program once Jones departed for UC. He brings 30 years of experience and joined CMU in 2009 after coaching at Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Indiana, Northern Illinois and Louisville.

Zacharias brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience at all levels of football. Prior to serving as a quality control assistant at CMU in 2009, he was the defensive coordinator at Mt. Hebron High School in Maryland, coaching his son Jameson during his senior year. He has also had stints at Maryland, Notre Dame, Stanford, Temple, Rutgers, Eastern Michigan, North Carolina, and Morehead State. He also spent time in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, and Atlanta Falcons.

Additional staff appointments will be announced once finalized.
