CINCINNATI – A record 37 University of Cincinnati student-athletes posted a 4.00 GPA in the Fall 2016 semester to lead the way for another successful semester in the classroom for Bearcats Athletics. As a department, UC student-athletes combined to tally a 3.202 GPA, just off the record from Spring 2016 of 3.21, and marked the 17th-consecutive grading period that the departmental GPA has been a 3.0 or better.
“We are extremely proud of what our student-athletes and their coaches are doing with our academic scoreboard,” said Senior Associate Athletic Director for UC’s Student-Athlete Support Services (S.A.S.S.) Dr. Joe Luckey. “We are most proud of their consistent commitment to achieving at the highest level. Our students are completing more hours each semester and continue to engage in more academic majors/minors/programs across campus while at the same time our overall department GPA has continued to rise.”
To achieve such high numbers, several records were set once again this semester. Individually, all three honors included a record-number of recipients, including 37 TopCats (4.0 semester GPA), 199 making the Dean’s List (3.4 or better semester GPA) and 307 student-athletes earning a place on the Bearcats Honor Roll (3.0 of better semester GPA).
Overall, 15 of the 17 teams on campus recorded a 3.1 GPA or better with five squads posting the highest mark in their program’s histories. Those teams include men’s cross country (3.604), men’s golf (3.366), men’s soccer (3.195), women’s golf (3.803) and women’s soccer (3.729). Women’s golf posted the highest GPA of any team with a 3.803 while men’s cross country led all men’s teams with their 3.604 GPA. Women’s basketball also was very successful as they recorded their highest team GPA since Fall 2006.
To honor their success, S.A.S.S. will recognize all 307 student-athletes when it hosts 3.0/4.0 Night in a halftime ceremony of the men’s basketball game with USF on January 29.
