CINCINNATI -- After three seasons in the National Football League, former Bearcats defensive end Trent Cole has received an invitation to play in the 2008 Pro Bowl. Cole, the first alternate for the NFC, will go in place of Patrick Kerney, at the Feb. 10 game.

A fifth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Cole blossomed into an every-down player in 2007. His 12.5 sacks tied him for sixth in the league. The Xenia, OH native was honored as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after managing 13 tackles and two sacks in the Eagles' Oct. 28 victory at Minnesota.

Cole becomes the third former Bearcat to have his ticket punched to play in the NFL all-star game. The last UC product to play in the Pro Bowl was the Elbie Nickel. Recently named to the Pittsburgh Steelers All-75th Anniversary Team, Nickel played end for 11 NFL seasons and enjoyed three Pro Bowl seasons (1952, 1953 and 1956). The other Pro Bowl honoree dates back to before World War II when Ray Nolting earned Pro Bowl honors in 1940 and 1941 as a member of the Chicago Bears.
