CINCINNATI - Twenty-three University of Cincinnati student-athletes earned spots on the 2011 Academic All-BIG EAST Conference Football Team, the league office announced Thursday.

The 23 Bearcats were among 182 BIG EAST players - the most in league history - who were chosen to the league's All-Academic Team.

The selection was made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee and is presented on the basis of academic credentials and athletic performance. Student-athletes on the team must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 through the Fall term of the 2011-12 academic year and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.

UC's honorees included: Alex Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn./Hixson), Austen Bujnoch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Tom DeTemple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), Drew Frey (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie), Jacob Giltrow (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), Dan Giordano (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), Alex Hoffman (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral), Sean Hooey (Litchfield, Mich./Hillsdale), Brendon Kay (Marine City, Mich./Marine City), Cory Keebler (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), Eric Lefeld (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater), John Lloyd (Cincinnati, Ohio/CHCA), Colin Lozier (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain), Jordan Luallen (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove/Georgia Tech), Breon Mapp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson/Thomas More), Mitch Meador (Greenwood, Ind./Whiteland Community), Tony Miliano (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), Pat O'Donnell (Lakeworth, Fla./Palm Beach Central), Demetrius Richardson (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee/USMAPS), Josh Russ (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), George Winn (Southfield, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and Adrian Witty (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach).

Schaffer was named the 2011 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, marking the third major academic award won by the football team over the past year. UC also won the BIG EAST Football Academic Achievement Award and John Goebel was the 2010 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The naming of the Academic All-BIG EAST team caps an outstanding academic year for UC that saw the Bearcats' overall team GPA for the fall quarter finish at a 2.73, a significant improvement over the in-season GPA of 2.69 the Bearcats posted in the fall of 2010. Forty-three student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or better while 23 student-athletes earned spots on the Dean's List, with quarter GPAs of 3.4 or above.
