Tyson Picked By Seattle In Sixth Round Of NFL Draft
April 29, 2017

Former University of Cincinnati football student-athlete Mike Tyson (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor/Hargrave Military) was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the third pick of the sixth round and the 187th selection overall, Saturday in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Shortly after his selection, Tyson described himself to Seahawks.com as a “very physical, competitive player, versatile. "I just want to get the job done and do anything to help the team," Tyson said. "Wherever they need me to do to help the team, I’ll do it… They told me to be open to all (positions), but be ready to compete at press corner. They told me to stay open to all defensive back positions.”

Tyson saw action in 43 games, making 23 starts and playing safety, cornerback and nickel back. He totaled 137 career tackles, including 7.5 for a loss, 11 passes defended and seven interceptions, five of which came in 2016. He was tabbed as a midseason All-America choice by Pro Football Focus and won the UC Jim Kelly Sr. Spirit Award. His five interceptions ranked among the top-10 in the NCAA FBS in 2016 and were the most for a UC player since DeAngelo Smith tallied eight in 2007.

He participated in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January 2017 and the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Tyson is not related to the boxer with the same name. Mike Tyson is a family name and the former Bearcat is the third male in his family with the same name. He has a three-year old son also named Mike Tyson.

“I get that question at least once a day,” Tyson told Seahawks.com. “If I meet anybody new, that’s probably one of the first things they ask me. Am I related to Mike Tyson? Can I fight like Mike Tyson? Who’s the real Mike Tyson? When they ask me who’s the real Mike Tyson, I tell them, ‘Both of us are real, he boxed, and I play football.’”
