CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati football team was named the best UC men's sports team, while the volleyball team earned the best UC women's sports team in a survey conducted by the University of Cincinnati Student Development Council. Since November, the SDC has polled the student body to compile the Best of UC Survey.
In helping gauge the student population and to gain a better understanding of the things that make them Proudly Cincinnati, the survey used categories ranging from the best UC tradition to best off-campus food.
The football team finished the regular season 12-0 and captured its second straight BIG EAST Conference title and Bowl Championship Series bid before falling in the Allstate Sugar Bowl to Florida. The 2009 season marked the second consecutive year the Bearcats have gone 6-0 at home. In the regular-season home finale against Illinois, the Bearcats recorded the largest crowd ever at Nippert Stadium, 35,106, en route to a 49-36 victory. They currently own a 12 game winning streak at Nippert, and over the past four seasons have posted a 22-3 record at home.
For the second consecutive season the women's volleyball team went to the NCAA Tournament, where they were defeated by Ohio State in the first round. They currently own the second longest home winning streak in the country, winning 28 in a row at Fifth Third Arena. They trail only Penn State, who are the three-time defending National Champions, and have won 72 matches in a row at home.
Representatives from both the football and volleyball teams will be honored on Wednesday, May 26, at 2 p.m. The event will be held in the boardroom of the University of Cincinnati Foundation, located within University Hall (on East Campus).
