CINCINNATI - Nearly 300 women were on hand and a record amount of funds were raised for breast cancer awareness at the Fifth Annual University of Cincinnati Women's Football 101, Thursday at Nippert Stadium and the Richard E. Lindner Center.
The clinic was hosted by Barb Jones, the wife of head coach Butch Jones and presented by Lebanon Ford Lincoln Mercury. Panera Bread, Trauth Dairy, and Post Printing were also sponsors of the event.
Proceeds from the event, totaling nearly $13,000 will benefit breast cancer research at the UC Barrett Cancer Center at University Hospital and its clinical, educational, and research programs. The donation is an event record and surpasses the $8,000 raised a year ago.
Members of the UC coaching staff were on hand to lead sessions on offense, defense, and, special teams as well as on field instruction involving tackling dummies, agility drills, and punt return catching.
Following throwing, catching, tackling, and kicking practice, the women headed to the state-of-the-art football meetings rooms where they spent 20 minutes each learning the facets of offense, defense, and special teams. From there they toured the locker and equipment rooms to get a behind the scenes look at what happens on gameday.
The evening concluded with a talk from Coach Jones, a highlight video, and a UC football fashion show that included players showing the crowd their equipment and how it is worn properly for safety.
As a special gift for everyone in attendance, each participant was given a UC Women's Football 101 gift pack.
