University of Cincinnati senior linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and senior defensive tackle Derek Wolfe (Lisbon, Ohio/Beaver Local) was named to the watch list for the 2011 Nagurski Trophy, the Charlotte Touchdown Club and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Friday.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player
Schaffer, a Second-Team all-BIG EAST selection a year ago, led the defense with his 111 tackles and 67 solo stops. It was the second-straight 100-tackle campaign for the junior. He also added 9.5 tackles for a loss; five pass break ups, three sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception, and quarterback hurry.
Wolfe started 12 games at defensive tackle, tallying 48 tackles, including 29 solo stops. He finished with 6.5 tackles for a loss, four sacks, a pair of quarterback hurries, one pass break up and one pass defended. He had eight tackles and a sack in the season opener at Fresno State and finished with seven tackles against both West Virginia and Pittsburgh.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner is chosen from five finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner, the best defensive player in America. The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be on Dec. 12 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
