Hoffman & Schaffer Named To Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List|
July 12, 2011
CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior offensive lineman Alex Hoffman (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and senior linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) were named to the watch list for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award, the Rotary Lombardi Awards Committee announced Tuesday.
Hoffman has made 25 starts on the offensive line, helping the Bearcats pave the way for UC's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2004. The offense topped the 200-yard rushing plateau in three games and the Bearcats had a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver for only the third time in program history. Hoffman earned Academic All-BIG EAST honors for the third straight season and has won the team's C-Club Strothman Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence twice. He was a Second-Team All-BIG EAST Conference honoree in 2009.
Schaffer, a Second-Team all-BIG EAST selection a year ago, led the defense with his 111 tackles and 67 solo stops. It was the second-straight 100-tackle campaign for the junior. He also added 9.5 tackles for a loss; five pass break ups, three sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception, and quarterback hurry. He was recently named to the watch list for the 2011 Bronko Nagusrki Trophy.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award, in its 42nd season, is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense of defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, and linebackers who set up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. All candidates also must be eligible to play college sports under the rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
