University of Cincinnati senior linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was named one of a record 132 nominees for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Tuesday.
The award, in its 20th year of existence, recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation. The honor is widely considered the sport's pre-eminent community service award.
Schaffer, a Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection a year ago, led the defense with his 111 tackles and 67 solo stops. It was the second-straight 100-tackle campaign for the junior. He also added 9.5 tackles for a loss; five pass break ups, three sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception, and quarterback hurry. He was recently named to the watch lists for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award and Bronko Nagusrki Trophy.
In the classroom, Schaffer is a three-time Academic All-BIG EAST honoree (2009, 2010, 2011), seven-time Top Cat Award Winner for a quarter GPA of 3.5 or above and he was inducted into the UC Athletics Academic Legion of Excellence in the Fall of 2010.
Off the field, he is heavily involved with UC's Cats in the Community Program, taking part in Right To Read, UC's Play After Practice program, Recess With The Bearcats, and College Mentors For Kids while also volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, Walnut Hills Soup Kitchen and at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams® were established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field.
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams® - one comprising of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA. The 22 student-athletes named to the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will be announced in late September.
The Bearcats, led by second-year head coach Butch Jones
, return 15 starters from the 2010 squad, including unanimous First-Team All-BIG EAST quarterback Zach Collaros
(Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville), as well as a trio of Second-Team All-BIG EAST honorees in running back Isaiah Pead
(Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor Academy), Schaffer and wide receiver D.J. Woods
