Football Holds First Preseason Practice Monday
Aug. 11, 2014

Venue: Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center

WEST HARRISON, IND. - The University of Cincinnati football team opened up preseason practice Monday, working out for over two hours in sunny and humid conditions at the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind.

The Bearcats, 9-4 a year ago in Head Coach Tommy Tuberville's first season, are one of the last teams in the country to begin training camp, due to UC's first game not taking place until Sept. 12, 2014 against Toledo inside Paul Brown Stadium.

"It was a pretty good start today," Tuberville said. "It was a little hot and we threw a lot at them. I thought all the quarterbacks did some good things. We are going to have some competition and it's not a given who is going to be our quarterback and there will be some pressure as we go along."

Jarred Evans (Queens, N.Y./West High/Santa Barbara CC), Gunner Kiel (Columbus, Ind./East/Notre Dame) and Munchie Legaux (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr) are all battling for the starting QB role. Legaux is working his way back from a severe knee injury suffered at Illinois in 2013. Tuberville phrased him at 80% starting training camp.

Special teams has been targeted as an area of improvement by the coaching staff and it will receive heavy emphasis during the time at Higher Ground with dedicated special teams periods every day.

Andrew Gantz (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) and Tony Miliano (North Bend, Ohio/Elder) will battle it out for the placekicking job. Both got off to a good start, making six field goals apiece to close out practice.

"We want to put our kickers and punters under pressure in our scrimmages and practice," Tuberville said. "It's a little bit different when you turn the lights on and scrimmage, but it's neck and neck right now."

Quote of the Day: Tuberville on UC's talented group of wideouts ... "I've never been around this many. We are going to have some weapons. Now we just have to be able to get it to them."

Highlights: During 11-on-11 drills, Kiel completed a long pass downfield to Mekale McKay (Louisville, Ky./Moore/Arkansas) ... on the next play, Grant Coleman (Columbus, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) made a full extension break up of a downfield pass from Evans ... UC's kickers made 12-straight field goals to end the first day of work.

News & Notes: Alex Chisum (Fayetteville, Ga./Sandy Creek), Lindsay Crook (Gold Coast, Australia/Southport School) and Legaux all returned to practice after suffering season-ending injuries in 2013 ... UC had some additions to its summer roster including: TE Jeremy Dollin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill/Virginia), TE Jake Golic (W. Hartford, Conn./NW Catholic/Notre Dame), CB Chris Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter/Arkansas) and DT Sione Tongamoa (N. Hollywood, Calif./Polytechnic/Merced) ... All but Murphy will be eligible for the 2014 campaign ... Korey Cunningham (Montevallo, Ala./Montevallo) has moved from defensive end to offensive line and Jeremy Graves (Cleveland, Ohio/Maple Hts.) has moved to safety from wide receiver.

Next Up: UC returns to the practice field Tuesday, working out in the afternoon for its second of five NCAA mandated acclimatization days.
