Football Puts Second Workout In Books Tuesday

Aug. 12, 2014

Venue: Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center
Gear: Helmets

WEST HARRISON, IND. - The University of Cincinnati football team continued its preseason preparations Tuesday, working out for two hours under cool, cloudy skies at the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind.

The Bearcats were in helmets for the second-straight day. They will progress to shoulder pads Wednesday before donning full pads on Friday.

"It was our last day in shorts today," Head Coach Tommy Tuberville said. "Tomorrow, we will put on shoulder pads and start having some contact. We can't tell a whole lot right now and it has been mostly mental stuff the first two days. We are in pretty good shape and we want to keep the players as healthy as we can and get some good physical work in when we put shoulder pads on. We have thrown a lot at them the first couple of days, but contact will start to separate some guys."

Tuberville went on to point out that some of the early standouts included Stephens (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid/Fork Union Military), a true freshman who enrolled in January and took part in spring ball.

"Linden Stephens is playing fast," Tuberville said. "The difference between good athletes that are experienced versus inexperienced is playing fast, not having to think and just reacting. You can tell the guys that were here in January."

Stephens was one of five enrollees in the spring, including: QB Jarred Evans (Queens, N.Y./West High/Santa Barbara CC), CB John James (Cleveland, Ohio/John Adams/Butler County CC), QB Hayden Moore (Clay, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) and Marcus Tappen (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle/Glendale CC).

"Obviously, we didn't bring our junior college players in to redshirt," Tuberville said. "They look pretty good. We will be able to tell more when we put pads on. Need to see how they play with leverage, how they play with their hands and how quick they play."

In addition to the spring enrollees, UC added four junior college players in time for training camp, DT Hakeem Allonce (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eleanor Roosevelt/Pierce CC), WR Casey Gladney (Columbia, S.C./Columbia/Copiah Lincoln CC), WR Johnny Holton (Miami, Fla./Coconut Grove/College of Dupage) and DT Sione Tongamoa (N. Hollywood, Calif./Polytechnic/Merced College).

Some of UC's top UCATS donors, members of the George Smith Society, were on hand for practice and dinner with the team afterwards. It is one of several donor events the Bearcats will hold during their two-week stay at Higher Ground.

"It's important for us to keep building on what we have started and our donors are a big part of that," Tuberville said. "They help support our scholarships and we thank them for all they do."

Quote of the Day: Director of Athletics Mike Bohn to UC's George Smith Society members ... "It's an honor to have you here. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our student-athletes. Our future is bright with you on our team."

Highlights: During 11-on-11 drills, Gunner Kiel (Columbus, Ind./East/Notre Dame) had a long pass completion to Chris Moore (Tampa, Fla./Thomas Jefferson) ... Munchie Legaux (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr) and Ralph David Abernathy IV (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster School) hooked up on a long pass up the middle during the same segment of practice ... Alex Thomas (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade Madonna) had a nice pass break up during the last period of practice.

News & Notes: Rob Rice (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) suffered a season-ending knee injury on Monday ... Rice is scheduled to undergo surgery at UC Medical Center Monday, performed by Dr. Angelo Colosimo, UC's director of orthopedic services ... Shai Alonzo (Duquesne, Pa./Woodland Hills) has moved from tight end to wide receiver ... UC's kickers were a combined 10-for-12 on field goals today with misses from 35 and 50 yards.

Next Up: UC will be back at it Wednesday, working out in the afternoon for its third of five NCAA mandated acclimatization days. The Bearcats will add shoulder pads to the mix for the first time tomorrow.
