Venue: Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center
Gear: Full Pads
WEST HARRISON, IND. - Full pads was the order of the day as the University of Cincinnati football team held its fifth preseason workout Friday, going for around three hours at the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind.
Friday was heavy on installation of the offensive and defensive red zone and third down packages. Short yardage work is on tap for Saturday morning ahead of Sunday's first scrimmage at Paul Brown Stadium.
"Had a good practice today," Head Coach Tommy Tuberville said. "Was our first day in full pads. Little more contact than we usually have, but our guys are holding together pretty good. We have a few bumps and bruises, but tomorrow we have a pair of short practices and we need to get our legs back for a good scrimmage Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium."
When asked about the progress of camp so far, Tuberville said things were going well through the first six workouts.
"It's been good," Tuberville said. "We have gotten a lot done. We have a lot of our situational stuff in. We are going to have to work more on our kicking game in terms of punt and kickoff return."
The quarterback battle between Jarred Evans (Queens, N.Y./West High/Santa Barbara CC), Gunner Kiel (Columbus, Ind./East/Notre Dame) and Munchie Legaux (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr) continues, but the group's progress caught the eye of the Bearcats' second-year head coach.
"I liked our quarterbacks today," Tuberville said. "They are starting to understand the speed of the game. We are trying to pick our plays up in terms of reps and time between reps and want them to react instead of thinking and let it become recognition."
The Bearcats 23-member senior class also got some attention, for their leadership and intensity.
"I like the intensity of our whole team," Tuberville said. "Our seniors are doing a great job, especially away from the practice field. They've done a good job getting these guys all ready to practice every day."
Quote of the Day: "Turn your iPad off! You overloaded the circuit." - Head Coach Tommy Tuberville to the football operations staff when the clock and scoreboard went out during a portion of practice Friday.
