WEST HARRISON, IND. – The University of Cincinnati football team held its first two-a-day session of 2014 Saturday at the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind.
The morning practice in full pads under cool skies went on for around 90 minutes while the afternoon session in shells was conducted for an hour in humid conditions.
UC again worked on its red zone and short-yardage play during the Saturday morning session. The afternoon practice featured a heavy emphasis on special teams with an extended period of the offense and defense working against their respective scout teams.
Most of the Bearcats’ preparations were focused on Sunday, the team’s first preseason scrimmage. UC will be playing on its 2014 home field, Paul Brown Stadium, for the first time. The Bearcats moved their home contests downtown this season due to the $86-million Nippert Stadium Renovation & Expansion Project which is scheduled to be completed in Aug. 2015.
Saturday also served as family day. Family members of UC players, coaches and staff were invited to view the afternoon practice and have dinner with the team.
With the transition to full pads, the focus turns to player safety and smart hitting. The Bearcats coaching staff has stuck to the fundamentals to ensure strong, sound tackling.
