CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati head football coach Brian Kelly's Next Man In philosophy was on display Thursday, as the third-year head coach awarded a scholarship to sophomore walk-on defensive back Wesley Richardson (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).

Richardson, a sophomore chemistry major, represents the sixth player under Kelly to have earned a scholarship through the walk-on program.

The others are Alex Daniels (Columbus, Ohio/Brookhaven/Minnesota), Charley Howard (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln), Jason Kelce (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Heights), Collin McCafferty (Maineville, Ohio/Kings), and Mike Windt (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder).

"Part of the development of a championship program is to have quality walk-ons," Kelly said. "Wesley (Richardson) and the others who have earned scholarships are key players on our team. As we continue to move forward as a program, we'll continue to reward deserving walk-ons."

Richardson played in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2008 on special teams. He made nine tackles on the year, including a pair of stops against both West Virginia and Syracuse.

The Bearcats will open the 2009 season on Monday, Sept. 7, in a 4 p.m. BIG EAST Conference game at Rutgers. Season tickets are available now by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX or visiting CATSTIX.com.
