CINCINNATI - The NFL kicked off its regular season this past weekend. Fourteen former Bearcats student-athletes were on opening day rosters, including five that appeared in their first career NFL regular season game.

Wide receiver Armon Binns (2007-10), who had been signed to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad late last season, made his first career start with the Bengals. Binns recorded his first career reception as well as totaling four receptions for 28 yards in a 44-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

First-year players and 2012 NFL Draft selections Derek Wolfe (2008-11), Isaiah Pead (2008-11), John Hughes (2008-11) and Adrien Robinson (2008-11) also made their first appearance in an NFL regular season contest. Denver Broncos second-round draft choice Derek Wolfe gained his first NFL start at defensive end and tallied three tackles, including a sack, in a 31-19 win versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fellow second-round selection by the St. Louis Rams, running back Isaiah Pead returned one kick for 25 yards in a 27-23 loss against the Detroit Lions.

In what has become a hotspot for former Bearcats to thrive in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles featured three former UC student-athletes in their starting lineup. Defensive end Trent Cole (2002-04) continued as a mainstay on the Eagles’ defensive line and registered two tackles, including one tackle for loss, in a 17-16 win against the Cleveland Browns. On the offensive side of the ball, second-year player Jason Kelce (2007-10) once again manned the center position, with tight end Brent Celek (2003-06) hauling in four catches for 65 yards in the win against the Browns.

The former Bearcats duo of defensive end Ricardo Mathews (2006-09) and offensive tackle Jeff Linkenbach (2006-09) each saw action in the Indianapolis Colts’ 41-21 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Houston Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin (2005-08) notched another start and recorded three tackles, including one tackle for loss, in a 30-10 win versus the Miami Dolphins.

In his first game as a Carolina Panther, Haruki Nakamura (2004-07) started at free safety and totaled four tackles in a 16-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kevin Huber (2007-08) launched four punts with a 45.8 yard average, including a long of 57 yards, and pinned one punt inside the 20-yard line in a 44-13 Bengals loss at Baltimore.

Mike Windt (2007-09) continued his duties as the primary long snapper for the San Diego Chargers in a 22-14 win versus the Oakland Raiders.
