CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior defensive tackle Derek Wolfe (Lisbon, Ohio/Beaver Local) has been named the National Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.

Wolfe had 10 tackles, a career-best 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in UC's 35-27 win over Connecticut on senior day at Nippert Stadium.

Cincinnati (9-3, 5-2 BIG EAST Conference) clinched a share of its third BIG EAST Championship in four years and is one of the most improved teams in the NCAA FBS after more than doubling its win total of four from a year ago.

The Bearcats' defense has been a large part of that turnaround, leading the nation in both sacks (3.6) and tackles for a loss (8.9) with the UC rushing defense ranking sixth nationally, giving up 93.7 yards per game on the ground.

Defensive linemen John Hughes (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) and Walter Stewart (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley), wide receiver Anthony McClung (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and linebacker J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) were all honorable mention honorees at their positions for the week.

Hughes had nine tackles, including four for a loss along with a sack, Stewart had a forced fumble and recovery for a touchdown, McClung grabbed a career-best eight balls for 142 yards and two touchdowns while Schaffer paced the defense with 11 tackles, one for a loss, a forced fumble and recovery.

The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.

The Bearcats return to action against Vanderbilt in the 53rd AutoZone Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31, 2011 at Liberty Bowl Stadium in Memphis, Tenn. The game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET and air on ABC.
