Football Battles Louisville For Keg Of Nails Thursday
The No. 23 University of Cincinnati football team will face No. 19/16 Louisville (10-1, 6-1 American) on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. ET in Nippert Stadium. The game, the 53rd Battle for the Keg of Nails, will air live on ESPN.

SCENARIOS
Cincinnati is still in the running for the American Athletic Conference’s Bowl Championship Series bid if the Bearcats beat Louisville Thursday, UCF loses to SMU Saturday, and UC is ranked higher than UCF in the final BCS standings.

THE SERIES
Thursday marks the 53rd meeting in a series that dates to 1929. The Cincinnati-Louisville rivalry dates to 1929. The winner of Thursday’s game gets the Keg of Nails, one of the more unique rivalry trophies with a somewhat vague origin. The trophy is a replica of a keg used to ship nails. Cincinnati has won four of the past five matchups, including two-in-a-row in Cincinnati.

THE COACHES
Tommy Tuberville, a 17-year head coaching veteran was named the 41st football head coach at the University of Cincinnati on Dec. 8, 2012. Widely regarded as one of the top coaches and recruiters in the collegiate game, comes to Cincinnati after three years at Texas Tech. Tuberville holds a 140-79 career record with head coaching stops at Texas Tech, Auburn and Ole Miss.

CHARLIE STRONG is in his fourth season at Louisville with a 34-15 career record. He was the defensive coordinator on the University of Florida staff which defeated UC in the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl. He is 1-2 against the Bearcats as a head coach and has led the Cardinals to bowl games, including the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl, in each of the past three seasons.

STREAKS, STORYLINES, SIDEBARS

  • The University of Cincinnati football team is playing its 126th season in 2013. The Bearcats’ program dates to 1885 and is one of the 10 oldest in major college football.
  • UC won four of the final five BIG EAST Championships and has played in a bowl game in six of the past seven seasons and two straight years.
  • UC has won 66 games (66-23) since the 2007 season, most among current American Athletic Conference teams.
  • UC is the only school in the country among the BCS AQ Conferences (American, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) to win four conference titles in the last five years.
  • UC is one of only four NCAA FBS AQ programs to have won 10 games in five of the past six seasons, joining Alabama, Oklahoma and Oregon.
  • Nippert Stadium will undergo an $86-million renovation and expansion in Dec. 2013. UC will play at PBS in 2014.
  • OL Ben Flick, WR Mark Barr and WR Javon Harrison were involved in a car accident on Sept. 21, 2013. Tragically, Flick lost his life and Barr was seriously injured, spent eight weeks in the hospital and was recently released. Barr is  continuing outpatient rehab with the UC sports medicine staff. Harrison was treated and released.
  • QB Munchie Legaux suffered a knee injury against Illinois, had surgery on Sept. 13 and will miss the rest of the year.
  • UC is 15-1 in its last 16 games at Nippert and has won six straight on the home turf, dating back to the home opener of the 2011 season against Austin Peay.
  • The Louisville game marks UC’s 14th all-time Thursday night affair. The Bearcats are 11-2 all-time in Thursday night games, including an 8-0 mark at Nippert Stadium and a 1-0 advantage over Louisville.
  • UC & UofL have no future games scheduled currently.
  • The Bearcats are No. 9 nationally in total defense (302.4) and rank fifth in rushing defense (91.5) and tied for ninth in scoring defense (18.5) and red zone defense (0.714).
