Football's Tony Pike Named To All-Mayday Team|
Dec. 24, 2008
CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati junior quarterback Tony Pike (Cincinnati, Ohio/Reading) was named to the 2008 All-Mayday Team Tuesday by ESPN college football analyst Mark May.
The team honors players who showed a great toughness and determination throughout the 2008 season.
Pike, a second-team all-BIG EAST selection, played the last seven games of the season with a broken left (non-throwing arm). He was injured on a rollout during the fourth quarter of the Akron game. Pike first returned at Connecticut, but was only able to play in the first half due to numbness in his left arm. He played the entire game against then No. 24/23 USF and led UC to a 24-10 victory.
He finished the regular season 183-of-291 for 2,168 yards and 18 touchdowns. He completed 63 percent of his passes and finished second in the BIG EAST in passing efficiency (141.07).
The No. 12 Bearcats (11-2) will face the No. 21/19 Virginia Tech in the 75th FedEx Orange Bowl at Dolphin Stadium at 8 p.m. on Jan. 1. It is UC's first appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game. The game will be televised nationally on FOX.
